Hawkeyes' dream season gets better
Big Ten roundup
The Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS - After time expired in Iowa's 45-21 win over Minnesota on Saturday, Hawkeyes fans tipped over one of the goal posts in a rather rowdy celebration.
Nobody really cared that it wasn't their stadium. After all, Iowa had clinched at least a share of its first Big Ten Conference title since 1990.
Brad Banks threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and Fred Russell ran for 194 yards as the sixth-ranked Hawkeyes (11-1, 8-0) forced six turnovers and beat the Golden Gophers (7-4, 3-4).
Jermelle Lewis added 101 yards rushing for Iowa, which finished undefeated in conference play for the first time since 1922.
"It was really a special win," said Kirk Ferentz, who was 11-24 in three seasons as the Hawkeyes' coach before this season. "A great day for our team, staff and coaches and for the entire state of Iowa."
Iowa will win the conference outright and qualify for the Rose Bowl if No.2 Ohio State (12-0, 7-0) loses to Michigan next week. The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes don't play each other this season.
Asad Abdul-Khaliq was 18-for-30 passing for 205 yards, two interceptions and two short touchdown runs for Minnesota, which has been bowl-eligible for a month but lost its third straight.
"We're feeling pretty low," Abdul-Khaliq said. "We know there are things we could've done to change the outcome of the game, but obviously we didn't do those things."
Banks was 9-of-17 passing for 100 yards, and Russell needed just 17 carries for his yards. Their efforts, plus a dominant showing by Iowa's offensive line, helped the Hawkeyes win the Floyd of Rosedale bronze-pig trophy for the second consecutive season.
No. 16 Penn State 58, Indiana 25BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Larry Johnson ran for 327 yards and a career-high four touchdowns and shattered a 31-year-old Nittany Lions rushing record.
Johnson also broke his own single-game school rushing record for the third time this season and broke Penn State's single-season record midway through the second quarter. Lydell Mitchell set the previous mark of 1,567 in 1971. Johnson finished the game with 1,736 yards.
Not only that, Johnson set a Memorial Stadium record for yards rushing by an opponent, breaking a 17-year-old mark set by Michigan State's Lorenzo White.
"I've said before he's a heck of a back," Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno said. "He's smart, he's gotten to be a good blocker. You can see he's a tough kid. If he breaks a tackle, if he gets free, he just outruns everybody."
Zack Mills threw for 137 yards and two touchdown passes as Penn State (8-3, 4-3 Big Ten) won its third consecutive game.
The combination of Johnson and Mills was too potent for Indiana (3-8, 1-6), which lost its fifth straight.
Purdue 45, Michigan State 42EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kyle Orton threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to John Standeford with three minutes remaining, rallying the Boilermakers (5-6, 3-4) past the Spartans (4-7, 2-5).
Orton, who came off the bench to lead Purdue to a 24-14 win over Michigan State a year ago in West Lafayette, Ind., replaced starter Brandon Kirsch on fourth-and-8 and threw the winning score. Kirsch was knocked out on a hard hit by Mike Labinjo.
Kirsch ran for 125 yards and a touchdown, and threw for a pair of scores. It was the seventh time a Boilermakers quarterback ran for 100 yards and the first since 1992. Kirsch also completed 13 of 25 passes for 208 yards, but two of his four interceptions were returned for touchdowns.
