Morning Memo

Hot tips and news to start your business day

Today's number: 1,912 - New aircraft that Boeing Co. says it expects China to buy during the next 20 years, worth $165 billion, as the country grows to become the world's second-largest aviation market after the United States.

Today's money tip: A mutual fund's "tax efficiency" tells you how good the fund is at avoiding taxes for its shareholders. A tax efficiency of 90 percent means that shareholders keep 90 percent of their return after paying taxes.

Today's career tip: When pursuing goals, sometimes people skip steps. Don't do that, implores David Niven, author of The 100 Simple Secrets of Successful People. Think about a sandwich and how it gets made: bread, fillings and then seasonings. "Even if you really liked mustard, you wouldn't put it on the plate first," says Mr. Niven. "Sometimes when pursuing goals, we wee the steps we want to take and sometimes try to skp steps that are less exciting. But stepping out of order is ultimately frustrating and futile."

Today's company: Smart Move Inspections

EXPERT SCRUTINY: Michael Connolly started this home inspections business in 1994, building on his experience in contracting, real estate appraisal and engineering consulting. Based in Hamilton, Smart Move inspects residential properties in Butler, Warren, Hamilton and Clermont counties.

NEW ON THE CHECKLIST: In the recent past the EPA has raised home buyer consciousness about the dangers of radon gas and lead-based paint.

Recent information about toxic mold makes it another major hazard for which home inspectors like Smart Move must be on the lookout. "Sick houses" needn't be old ones, Mr. Connolly said. Sometimes mold moves in with materials used in new construction.

MULTI-MEDIA REPORTS: Smart Move uses high tech approaches when possible. The company works out of a mobile office that allows reports to be entered into a computer immediately. All inspections include digital photos and digital video.

INSTANT GRATIFICATION: With its ability to e-mail inspection reports and photos, Smart Move was able to send a Hong Kong client an immediate response on the Tristate home he wanted to purchase. The client in turn gave the go-ahead to his real estate agent that same day.
