Why not sweet potato cheesecake?
David McMullen sells gourmet cheesecakes at his Luxury Sweets shop in Kenwood Towne Centre food court. Growing up in Detroit, he loved his mother's sweet potato pie. So when he decided to create a new holiday cheesecake, he naturally went with his favorite tuber.
"I've heard of pumpkin cheesecake,'' says Mr. McMullen. "But I never ate pumpkin pie when I was a kid.''
He spent days trying to get his mother's sweet potato pie recipe over the phone, which was difficult because she doesn't use a recipe. Finally, Mr. McMullen settled on a formula and swirled the smooth, orange sweet potato filling into his basic New York-style cheesecakes.
Some who taste the rich cakes think they're made with pumpkin, but those who love sweet potatoes know differently. $3.50 per slice/ $35 per cheesecake.
