It's been a very good year for Graeter's. First, back in June, Oprah Winfrey declared Cincinnati's hometown ice cream as her favorite on national TV. (The Mighty O is reportedly partial to Graeter's butter pecan.) USA Today soon followed by including Graeter's in its list of best ice creams. More recently, the November issue of Martha Stewart Living features the company in its round-up of "Tasty Destinations.'' And the Nov. 8 issue of Entertainment Weekly puts Graeter's at No. 4 on its "Scout 100 Holiday Gift List,'' again citing the Oprah endorsement.

Cranberries grow in the northern climes of North America and Europe and are harvested in September and October. Discard berries that are discolored or shriveled. Refrigerate cranberries, tightly wrapped, for up to two months and freeze up to a year. Simmer with other fruit, such as oranges and apples, for sauces, conserves and chutneys.

Orval ($5/ 11.2 ounces): Five dollars for less than 12 ounces of beer? Yes. Most emphatically, yes. The sole product of a Trappist monastery in Belgium, this is one of the most unique beers in the world. Nothing can compare to it for sheer complexity, and it will amply reward those who take time to properly enjoy it.
