Top 25: Washington stuns No. 3 Wash. State

Cougars foiled by bizarre play in triple OT

The Associated Press

PULLMAN, Wash. - John Anderson kicked five field goals, including the game-winner from 49 yards out in the third overtime, and Kai Ellis forced and recovered a fumble to secure Washington's 29-26 victory over No. 3 Washington State on Saturday.

It was one of the most dramatic finishes in the Apple Cup, the annual game between the in-state rivals.

It also spoiled Washington State's chance to secure a Rose Bowl berth with a victory. Now the Cougars (9-2, 6-1 Pac-10) must win at UCLA on Dec.7 to capture the conference title.

The ending was bizarre, providing a fitting finish that surely will be debated for years among fans.

Washington (7-5, 4-4) had the ball first in the third OT, and after a sack and two incompletions by Cody Pickett, it was up to Anderson. He trotted out for the 49-yard attempt, and a collective groan arose from Martin Stadium when his kick sailed true.

The Cougars took over, and it was all over on their first play. Quarterback Matt Kegel, who was in the game because starter Jason Gesser was knocked out in the fourth quarter with an injured right shin, dropped back and tried to throw. The ball came loose, and Ellis leaped on it.

No. 4 Oklahoma 60, No. 24 Texas Tech 15

NORMAN, Okla. - Quentin Griffin ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns, and the Sooners' defense held Red Raiders quarterback Kliff Kingsbury to his lowest passing total of the year (187 yards).

The victory gives Oklahoma (10-1, 6-1 Big 12) the South Division title. The Sooners finish the regular season next week against Oklahoma State, then play No.16 Colorado for the conference championship on Dec.7.

Texas Tech (8-5, 5-3) had averaged 503 yards behind Kingsbury.

No. 7 USC 52, UCLA 21

PASADENA, Calif. - Carson Palmer threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kareem Kelly on the first play from scrimmage, and that got the Trojans (9-2, 7-1 Pac-10) off and running.

The 52 points were the most scored by either team in the series since USC defeated the Bruins 52-0 in 1930 - the second meeting between the teams. The year before that, the Trojans beat UCLA 76-0.

The win was the sixth straight for USC and its fourth in a row over the Bruins after UCLA had won eight straight in the rivalry.

The Bruins (7-4, 4-3) had their three-game winning streak snapped.

The Trojans finish the regular season Saturday against No.8 Notre Dame at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Auburn 17, No. 9 Alabama 7

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Freshman sub Tre Smith ran for 126 yards and Jason Campbell threw a pair of TDs to Robert Johnson to lead the Tigers' upset in the Iron Bowl.

Auburn, a 10 1/2-point underdog, led 17-0 at halftime and used a stifling defense to shut down the SEC's top offense.

The Tigers (8-4, 5-3 SEC) were playing their fourth-string tailback in his first start and went without a fullback in an injury-depleted backfield against the nation's top-rated defense.

The Crimson Tide (9-3, 6-2) had won five straight games.

No. 10 Kansas St. 38, Missouri 0

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Darren Sproles ran for 116 yards and a 12-yard touchdown, setting two school records in the process, as the Wildcats won easily.

Kansas State (10-2, 6-2 Big 12) reached 10 victories for the seventh time in school history, including five of the last six years. The Wildcats have beaten Missouri (5-7, 2-6) 10 straight times.

Tigers redshirt freshman QB Brad Smith became the second player in NCAA history to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in a season.

N.C. State 17, No. 14 Florida St. 7

RALEIGH, N.C. - T.A. McLendon rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown and the Wolfpack's defense held the Seminoles to 177 total yards.

N.C. State (10-3, 5-3 ACC) became the first team in the Atlantic Coast Conference to beat Florida State two years in a row. The Wolfpack won 34-28 last season.

N.C. State also snapped its three-game losing streak with a stunning defensive performance to win 10 games for the first time in 111 years of Wolfpack football.

Florida State (8-4, 7-1) can do no worse than tie Maryland for the ACC crown. The Seminoles' offensive output was the second lowest in Bobby Bowden's 325 games as coach.

Virginia 48, No. 18 Maryland 13

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Matt Schaub threw three touchdown passes and Wali Lundy scored three times as the Cavaliers (8-4, 6-2 ACC) ended the Terrapins' eight-game winning streak.

Virginia, picked to finish eighth in the league in the preseason, instead wrapped up second place and likely enhanced its bowl stake with Peach and Tangerine bowl officials watching.

Schaub was 23-for-27 for 249 yards, becoming the Cavaliers' single-season yardage leader with 2,751 yards and extending his TD pass record to 26.

Maryland fell to 9-3, 5-2.

No. 20 Colorado St. 22, New Mexico 14

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - After converting two turnovers into touchdowns, including Rhett Nelson's long fumble return, the Rams clinched the Mountain West Conference title.

Colorado State (10-2, 6-0) posted its sixth straight win, even though leading rusher Cecil Sapp played only sparingly because of turf toe.

New Mexico (6-6, 4-2) rallied from a 19-0 second-quarter deficit. But the Lobos couldn't overcome failures on fourth down in the second half.

Colorado State, headed to the Liberty Bowl on Dec.31, prevailed despite being outgained 307-252.

No. 15 Penn St. 61, Mich. St. 7

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Larry Johnson rushed for 279 yards and four TDs - all in the first half - and became the first Penn State back to top 2,000 yards in a rout of Michigan State (4-8, 2-6).

It was the most points given up in 80 years by a Michigan State team, since a 63-0 loss to Michigan in 1922.

Johnson's fourth TD, a 38-yarder, pushed his season total to 2,015 yards on 251 carries, setting an NCAA record with an average of 8.02 yards per carry. He also had two scoring runs of 11 yards and another of 78 yards.

The Nittany Lions (9-3, 5-3 Big Ten) now wait to hear where they'll play in their first bowl game since 1999. Penn State is likely headed to the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.

East Carolina 31, No. 22 TCU 28

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Travis Heath returned a fumble 81 yards for a touchdown as the Pirates (4-6, 4-2 C-USA) rallied from an 11-point deficit to end TCU's eight-game winning streak. The Horned Frogs are 8-2, 5-2.

The Pirates (4-6, 4-2 C-USA) threw the league title race into chaos with the win. The Horned Frogs (8-2, 5-2) had hoped to clinch a share of the league title and secure a berth in one of the conference's five bowl tie-ins. While TCU might still go to a bowl, it might not be the Liberty Bowl, which takes the conference champion.

Donta Hobbs ran for two touchdowns and took a 3-yard pass from Sean Stilley with 7:21 left in the third period to give TCU a 28-17 lead.

No. 23 Boise St. 44, Nevada 7

RENO, Nev. - Brock Forsey ran for 187 yards and four touchdowns as the Broncos (11-1, 8-0) won the Western Athletic Conference title. The Wolf Pack is 5-7, 4-4.

Ryan Dinwiddie completed 10 of 15 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown for Boise State (11-1, 8-0 WAC), which is headed to a postseason bowl for the third year in a row.

Nate Burleson, the nation's leading receiver, had seven catches for 71 yards to set a single-season reception record for Nevada (5-7, 4-4), but the Boise State defense held him without a catch until the third quarter.
