Big Ten: Nittany Lions stomp Spartans
Johnson tops 2,000-yard mark with big rushing game for PSU; Gains 279 yards vs. Michigan St.
The Associated Press
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Larry Johnson completed his sensational late-season surge Saturday by becoming the ninth player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season. He racked up 279 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of No.15 Penn State's 61-7 victory Saturday.
"He's got my vote for the Heisman," Spartans receiver Charles Rogers said. "I saw firsthand what he could do."
Johnson scored on runs of 11, 78, 11 and 38 yards, and his last run gave the Nittany Lions a 48-0 lead with 2:38 left in the first half. Penn State got the ball back with a minute left, and Johnson ran onto the field before being called back.
Mercifully for the Spartans, Johnson's day was over.
"I had a great season and a great run. This is the ultimate way to cap off this season," Johnson said. "I didn't think I could be a 1,000-yard back. This was a long season, and I got frustrated at times, but I really kept pushing and kept through all the hard times, and I had success with it."
Johnson finished with 2,015 yards, becoming the first Penn State player to top the mark. He also set an NCAA record by averaging 8.02 yards per carry, eclipsing the mark of 7.8 set by Nebraska's Mike Rozier in 1983.
Purdue 34, Indiana 10WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Brandon Jones ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns as the Boilermakers became bowl-eligible for a sixth straight season and won the Old Oaken Bucket.
The Boilermakers (6-6, 4-4) are headed for their sixth bowl game in six seasons under coach Joe Tiller. They had only been to five bowls before he took over - and none since 1984.
Kyle Orton, who on Tuesday said he would consider transferring if he couldn't win back his starting job next spring, came off the bench to lead Purdue on five scoring drives and 539 yards of total offense. Orton completed his first five attempts and was 22-for-28 overall for 173 yards, picking apart Indiana (3-9, 1-7) with short passes.
Wisconsin 49, Minnesota 31MADISON, Wis. - Anthony Davis ran for a career-high 301 yards and five touchdowns on 45 carries as the Badgers won back Paul Bunyan's Axe. Davis's five TDs tied the school record set by Billy Marek against Minnesota in 1974.
The Badgers (7-6, 2-6) became bowl-eligible for the first time since 2000 and avoided a last-place finish in the conference and a second straight losing season.
The Gophers (7-5, 3-5), who led 31-28 early in the fourth quarter, also will get a bowl bid, even though they haven't won since October.
Illinois 31, Northwestern 24EVANSTON, Ill. - Jon Beutjer threw three touchdowns passes and ran for another score to lead the Illini (5-7, 4-4).
Antoineo Harris ran for 178 yards against the Wildcats (3-9, 1-7), giving him 1,330 this year and breaking Robert Holcombe's single-season school rushing record.
