Buckeyes swipe two first-place votes from Miami
The Associated Press
Miami is still No.1, but it's no longer unanimous. Second-ranked Ohio State (13-0) picked up two first-place votes in Sunday's new Associated Press Top 25 poll on the strength of its 14-9 victory over rival Michigan.
Miami (10-0) beat Pittsburgh 28-21 on Thursday night and received 71 first-place votes from the sports writers and broadcasters on the AP panel. The Hurricanes lead the Buckeyes in points 1,823-1,748.
Washington State (9-2), which lost 29-26 to Washington in triple overtime, dropped six spots to No.9, with Oklahoma (10-1) moving up one spot to No.3 after its 60-15 win over Texas Tech.
Iowa, co-Big Ten champions with Ohio State, moved up one place to No.4, followed by Georgia, USC, Notre Dame, Kansas State, Washington State and Texas.
In the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, the top 5 were Miami, Ohio State, Iowa, Oklahoma and Georgia.
The latest Bowl Championship Series standings will be released Monday, with Miami and Ohio State expected to be the top two teams although the order is too close to call. The Buckeyes, who completed their season, have already accepted an invitation to play in the BCS national title game in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 3.
Penn State (9-3), off its 61-7 win over Michigan State, jumped four place to No. 11. Michigan (9-3) remained No. 12 despite its loss to Ohio State.
Alabama (9-3) fell five places to No. 14 after a 17-7 loss to Auburn. Florida State tumbled to No. 23 from No. 14 after a 17-7 loss to North Carolina State.
New teams in this week's Top 25 are Auburn, North Carolina State and West Virginia. TCU, Texas Tech and UCLA dropped out.
COLORADO STATE: The 16th-ranked Rams (10-2), who clinched the Mountain West Conference championship on Saturday, accepted a bid to play in the Liberty Bowl. This will be Colorado State's third trip to the Liberty Bowl, which will be played Dec.31 against a yet-to-be-determined Conference USA team.
"We're excited to have one of the best teams in the country coming to Memphis," said Steve Ehrhart, the bowl's executive director.
"The Rams have a great coach in Sonny Lubick, a thrilling quarterback in Bradlee Van Pelt and one of college football's top running backs in 1,000-yard rusher Cecil 'The Diesel' Sapp."
FLORIDA STATE: Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden has opened up the competition at quarterback again after watching Adrian McPherson struggle in Saturday's 17-7 loss to North Carolina State.
Bowden said he will decide whether McPherson or Chris Rix will start the finale against No.15 Florida after he watches them practice. McPherson took over for Rix after Florida State lost 34-24 to Notre Dame on Oct.26.
WASHINGTON STATE: Cougars quarterback Jason Gesser was scheduled to begin rehab work Sunday after spraining his right ankle against Washington.
Washington State wasn't sure if Gesser will be available for the team's game at UCLA on Dec.7. The Cougars (9-2, 6-1 Pac-10) need to win to clinch a Rose Bowl berth.
X-rays taken after the game showed that Gesser didn't break the ankle. the quarterback will be on crutches indefinitely.
"We will begin treatment Sunday and work with Jason all week," Washington State trainer Bill Drake said. "Jason will wear a protective walking boot and he will be on crutches for an indefinite length of time. We will have a better idea of his recovery time by next weekend."
Gesser, who owns virtually every Washington State career passing record, was injured when he was sacked by Washington's Terry Johnson for a 16-yard loss with 9:50 remaining.
