Women: RedHawks upset Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior guard Heather Cusick scored a career-high 36 points to lead the Miami RedHawks past Michigan State 86-84 in the championship game of the Spartan Chevrolet Classic.

The RedHawks (2-0) fought off a spirited rally by the Spartans (1-1), who trailed by 10 with six minutes but buried two 3-pointers in the final 1:09 to close within one point. Cusick sank a free throw with 16 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

No. 1 Duke 76, No. 2 Tennessee 55

In Raleigh, N.C., Alana Beard had 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals to power top-ranked Duke (2-0) over No.2 Tennessee 76-55 in the inaugural women's Jimmy V Classic. It was the 35th meeting of No. 1 vs. No. 2 women. Tennessee (1-1) has been involved in 19 such matchups and dropped to 4-6 when ranked second.

Iciss Tillis added 17 points for Duke (2-0) on 7-for-10 shooting.

Tennessee (1-1) turned the ball over 23 times and shot 21 percent in the second half, making just 6-of-29 shots. Gwen Jackson led the Lady Vols with 12 points.

No. 3 LSU 93, SE Louisiana 52

HAMMOND, La. - Seimone Augustus scored 17 points as Louisiana State defeated Southeastern Louisiana.

DeTrina White and Temeka Johnson each scored 12 for LSU (2-0), which led 40-32 at halftime. White was 4-of-5 from the field and hit all four of her free throws. Augustus hit 8-of-10 of her shots.

Melissa Williams scored 12 points for Southeastern (1-1).

No. 4 Kansas State 88, No. 14 Penn State 66

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kendra Wecker had 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Laurie Koehn scored 23 as Kansas State topped Penn State to win the preseason WNIT.

Kansas State (4-0), which beat opponents by an average of 16 points during the weeklong tournament, pulled away from the Lady Lions (4-1) with an 8-0 run with 4:34 remaining to win its first WNIT title.

Nicole Ohlde had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Megan Mahoney scored 16 for Kansas State.

Kelly Mazzante, who came in averaging 29.8 points a game, had 18. Tanisha Wright led the Lady Lions with 26 points.

No. 5 Stanford 59, San Francisco 57

SAN FRANCISCO - Kelley Suminski scored the winning basket with 17.7 seconds left as Stanford survived a scare from San Francisco.

Chelsea Trotter scored 14 points for the Cardinal (2-0), who overcame 21 turnovers. Azella Perryman added 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Sebnem Kimyacioglu had 11 points and five assists.

Joy Hollingsworth made 5-of-6 3-pointers on the way to 18 points for San Francisco (1-2), which has not beaten Stanford since the 1984-85 season, a string of 11 straight losses.

No. 6 Connecticut 78, North Carolina State 50

RALEIGH, N.C. - Diana Taurasi scored 15 points to help Connecticut overcome a sluggish shooting performance and beat North Carolina State in the inaugural Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic.

Barbara Turner came off the bench to score 13 points and Ashley Battle added 11 for defending national-champion Connecticut (2-0), which won its 41st straight game.

Kaayla Chones scored 18 for N.C. State (0-1) before fouling out with 5:37 remaining. She accounted for 11 of N.C. State's 16 points in the first half.

No. 7 Purdue 91, Pacific 57

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Beth Jones scored 18 points, and Shereka Wright added 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Purdue over Pacific.

The Boilermakers (2-0) broke the game open with a 37-7 run to close the first half. Purdue made more shots from the line (17) than the field (15) in the first half, and limited Pacific (0-2) to 28 percent shooting.

Mary Jo Noon shot 8-for-9 from the line and finished with 16 points for Purdue.

No. 13 Texas Tech 99, Washington 67

LUBBOCK, Texas - Natalie Ritchie made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead Texas Tech over Washington.

Texas Tech (1-1) scored 11 straight points to extend its lead to 19-5 with 12:20 remaining in the first half, and went on a 13-0 run that made it 34-15 with 4:41 left in the first half.

Giuliana Mendiola scored 17 points for Washington (1-1).

No. 13 North Carolina 106, ETSU 40

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Jessica Sell scored 20 points and fellow freshman La'Tangela Atkinson added 17 points and 10 rebounds as North Carolina beat ETSU.

None of the starters for the Tar Heels (2-0) played more than 20 minutes against the overmatched Lady Bucs (0-2).

Sell was 8-for-11 from the field and added four rebounds, five assists and four steals off the bench. North Carolina had 22 steals in the game and shot 56 percent from the floor.

B.J. Banjo led East Tennessee State with nine points.

No. 19 Boston College 66, Siena 40

BOSTON - Amber Jacobs scored 26 points and Jessalyn Deveny added a career-high 23 to lead Boston College to an easy victory over Siena.

Jacobs hit four 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and finished 6-for-6 from beyond the arc as Boston College seized control with an early 29-3 run.

Mary McKissack scored 12 points and Gunta Basko added 10 for Siena (2-2).

No. 22 Iowa St. 67, St. Francis, Pa., 45

AMES, Iowa - Lindsey Wilson scored 19 points and Anne O'Neil added 10 to lead Iowa State to a win over St. Francis.

Seven Iowa State players made at least one 3-pointer, and the Cyclones finished with 13 3s.

Beth Swink had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Lauren Gompers added 10 points for St. Francis in its opener.
