Georgia Tech 78, Miami 62

Enquirer news services

ATLANTA - Sonja Mallory scored 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets handed the slow-starting RedHawks their first loss of the season in the Atlanta Marriott NW Classic championship game.

Miami (3-1) struggled out of the gates, failing to score until Melanie Kozlowski's 3-pointer at 13:35 ended Georgia Tech's 12-0 game-opening run. The RedHawks then closed within 16-10 but couldn't assemble a substantial first-half run.

Miami drew within 45-35 in the second half before the Yellow Jackets (4-1) ran ahead again, leading by 22 points with 6:45 to play. The RedHawks responded with a 10-0 run, but Mallory took control from there, scoring nine points over the next five minutes.

Kozlowski led Miami with 17 points, while Kim Lancaster had 12.

Mallory, the tournament's MVP, also blocked two shots. Lancaster and Heather Cusick, who finished with nine points and six assists, were the RedHawks named to the all-tournament team.
