Elder's Schenke contributes at Miami
Sophomore leads team in assists

Three televisions were tuned to three different games Saturday at the Schenke household in Mack, but the only one anybody was watching was the one showing what became Elder's win over Warren Harding in the Division I state championship football game.
"I saw the whole thing on TV," said Miami sophomore forward Tim Schenke, an Elder graduate. "I was pumped the whole time. I kept track all throughout their playoff run. It was nice to win the first one."
Schenke, an Our Lady of Visitation product who said he used to drive Panthers quarterback Rob Florian to school, was able to be home for the game only because his RedHawks basketball team had played and lost at Wright State that afternoon. He got 10 minutes of playing time, equaling the total he played as a walk-on at Miami last season.
After scoring eight points in six games last season, the 6-foot-6 Schenke has earned a scholarship and become a top substitute for the 1-3 RedHawks this season. He is averaging 14.5 minutes a game while playing in all four Miami games, and he leads the RedHawks with eight assists and an 8-2 assist-to-turnover ratio.
"I was expecting it," Schenke said. "I knew that I'd worked hard in the offseason. Even though I wasn't on scholarship last year, I came up every day this summer to work out with the team. I think it helped to play with the guys and be around the coaches and talk with them.
"I knew the coaches wanted me to work on my shot a whole lot, and I knew they wanted me to get stronger. We've got some new machines, and that allows us to get as many shots as we could. I would lift two hours four times a week, and I averaged two hours a day working on my shooting. When I came home, I worked out at the Friar's Club."
"I was impressed," Miami coach Charlie Coles said. "He made sure we knew he was around. Tim's a very hard worker and a wonderful person. I can't emphasize that enough. I like coaching him."
Schenke scored a season-high three points twice last season, against Xavier and Ohio. This season, he scored five points in the opener against Purdue.
"He's got good skill level. I see some good things in him," Coles said.
Game times for Saturday's home doubleheader are 2p.m. for the women against Wright State and 4p.m. for the men against Western Michigan.
