UK's Pinner selected best in SEC
Pinner wins offensive award
ATLANTA - Kentucky running back Artose Pinner was picked as the Southeastern Conference's top offensive player on the All-SEC team released Tuesday.
Pinner was one of three Kentucky players who made the first team, joined by all-purpose player Derek Abney and punter Glenn Pakulak. Pinner, a 5-foot-11, 231-pound senior, led the SEC with 1,414 yards rushing - 341 more than anyone else - and 13 touchdowns as Kentucky transformed itself from a pass-oriented team to one that relied heavily on the run.
Pinner barely touched the ball his first two seasons with the Wildcats, then led the team with a mere 441 yards as a junior. This season, he led the SEC with 283 carries.
Georgia's Mark Richt was selected coach of the year for leading the Bulldogs to the league title and a berth in the Sugar Bowl.
Georgia (12-1) routed Arkansas 30-3 on Saturday to earn the SEC title and secure just the second 12-win season in school history.
Quarterback David Greene, running back Musa Smith, offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb, receiver Terrence Edwards and kicker Billy Bennett were first-team selections on the offensive side. The Georgia defense was represented by David Pollack, defensive player of the year; linebacker Boss Bailey; and defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan.
Vanderbilt running back Kwane Doster was named freshman of the year.
Florida's Rex Grossman, the All-SEC quarterback in 2001, didn't receive a vote for this year's team.
Eight first-team picks were the most ever for Georgia, surpassing seven in both 1976 and 1980. Both of those teams won the SEC championship, with the '80 squad also claiming the national title with a perfect 12-0 record.
"I told them the team that wins the SEC gets all the accolades," Richt said. "I told them to just worry about the team and everything else will come."
Richt, in only his second season as a head coach, led the Bulldogs to a 7-1 mark in the SEC and a third-place finish in the Bowl Championship Series standings. If not for a 24-17 loss to Florida, Georgia might have played for the national championship.
