Drake's 162 points short of record

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake gave up 23 3-point baskets and 110 points - and still walked away smiling. Easy to do when you've just scored 162.

Drake scored on a succession of layups and dunks in beating Division III Grinnell 162-110 on Wednesday night.

Grinnell mimics the former frentic style of Loyola Marymount, which set the NCAA record for points with 186 against U.S. International on Jan. 5, 1991. Grinnell was averaging 140 points a game.

The Pioneers press from start to finish and will surrender a layup for a chance to come back down and make 3-pointer.

"It's fun to play, fun to watch, tough to coach against," Drake coach Kurt Kanaskie said. "The game takes forever. But it's a unique way of playing. I think if you're a player at Grinnell, you've got to love it."

Drake's players loved it for one night.

The Bulldogs (4-4) shot 78.6 percent (33-of-42) in the second half and 68 percent for the game. During one stretch in the second half, Drake made 16 straight shots. Here's why: Drake was credited with 125 points in the paint and 101 fast-break points. Grinnell, which launched 73 3-point attempts among its 102 shots, had 26 inside points.

"We had a great time with the game," said Drake's Greg Danielson, who had 25 points and 15 rebounds. "Just to be able to see a team that's just going to give you layups, that's their style. We adapted to it well."

"Thank God for Division III," Grinnell coach David Arseneault said. "That's where we belong. Yeah, I'm very thankful for the opportunity to come down here. I'd liked to have put on a little better show shooting-wise. But a lot of that has to do with how we were defended by Drake."

Grinnell shot 37 percent and was outrebounded 67-35.

"It's a different level of athleticism than we face," Arseneault said.

J.J. Sola led Drake with a career-high 36 points and had 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes. Freshman Quantel Murphy made all 10 of his shots and scored 25 points, including four crowd-pleasing dunks. His two-handed, double-pump reverse slam gave Drake its 100th point - with 15:17 left.

Murphy drew the biggest roar of the night when he reached with one hand to grab David Newman's lob pass and slammed it through while being fouled. Even Arseneault could appreciate that.

"I saw a couple of dunks tonight that we don't get to see on normal occasions," he said. "That's fun for us to watch, too. Of course, I don't know how our guys felt being underneath them when they were going to the rim."

Ken Heiser led Grinnell with 22 points. Luke McDonald and Sean Tracy each scored 16 for Drake and David Bancroft scored 14, going 6-for-6 from the field.

"Watching them on tape, we knew we were in for something a little different," Sola said. "But it was fun to get out there and run and gun just like they do. You can't try to change their momentum. You've just got to have fun with it."
