Basket eludes cold-shooting Miami

OXFORD - A new starting lineup didn't solve Miami's shooting woes as the RedHawks dropped to 3-5 after a 59-42 loss to Butler Saturday. The visiting Bulldogs (7-0) outshot struggling Miami before 2,452 fans at Millett Hall. The RedHawks have two weeks to find an offensive answer before their Dec.28 game against the University of Cincinnati. Sophomore forward Danny Horace scored 10 points to lead Miami. The RedHawks shot 35 percent (16-of-46) from the field, including 2-for-13 (15 percent) on 3-pointers. Their two 3-pointers matched their season low. Junior guard-forward Duane Lightfoot came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points for the Bulldogs, who shot 49 percent from the field. Coach Charlie Coles tried a new starting lineup for the first time this season, replacing senior guard Matt Jameson and senior forward Bryan Reed with freshman guard Josh Hausfeld (Roger Bacon) and sophomore forward Tim Schenke (Elder). "We think we need more scoring," Coles said. "Matt does a great job, but we don't get a whole lot of scoring out of him. We need a shooter. Josh is a freshman, and we want to get him going." Hausfeld hit a second-half 3-pointer for his only points of the game. The crowd included a vocal Butler contingent, which seemed to inspire the Bulldogs. Monserez led Butler with six assists, while Cornette was second with five. "Playing close to home is always fun," Butler center Joel Cornette (St. Xavier) said. "A lot of friends and family get to come out and see me play, and they can't always do that." NOTE: Channel 64's production truck lost electric power five minutes before its television broadcast was scheduled to begin.
