No. 7 Indiana 66, Purdue 63
Newton's post play saves Hoosiers
The Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS - Jeff Newton scored all 16 of points in the second half, including nine in the final three minutes, as seventh-ranked Indiana held off Purdue 66-63 on Saturday night.
Newton also grabbed 12 rebounds to become the first Hoosiers player since Alan Henderson in 1995 to record five consecutive double-doubles.
Indiana (8-0), off to its best start since 1989-90, also won its fifth straight game over the Boilermakers (4-2). Purdue was led in scoring by Willie Deane's 21 points.
The Duel in the Dome was scheduled as a nonconference game after the Big Ten's rotating schedule pitted the two rivals only once this season.
Neither team had won more than four straight in the series since Indiana won six straight from March 1973 to February 1976, but the Hoosiers changed that in a game that had the atmosphere of a late-season contest with a conference title at stake.
Midway through the second half, Indiana coach Mike Davis gestured to the large television screen inside the RCA Dome and pleaded for a goaltending call after Newton was fouled. Davis didn't get the call. A few minutes later, Purdue coach Gene Keady screamed at official Ed Hightower when he didn't get a call, and both coaches were on the officials during the closing minutes when the Hoosiers pulled away.
During a 3:30 stretch midway through the second half, the teams traded leads eight times and had two ties.
Newton proved to be the difference. After missing his first six shots, Newton dominated in the final 3:13 when Purdue's post players were in foul trouble.
Newton made five of six free throws to give Indiana a 59-56 lead with 2:10 to go, then had a dunk and two free throws to make it 63-60.
Freshman guard Bracey Wright, who finished with 13 points, made three of four free throws in the final 24 seconds, and Newton's interception of Kenny Lowe's inbounds pass sealed the win.
