HAMILTON - A 40-year-old Middletown man has been indicted in the November rape and attempted murder of a 67-year-old, partially disabled woman - an attack that authorities say happened after he violated parole.
Timothy James Engle faces up to 38 years in prison if convicted of attempted murder, rape, aggravated robbery and felonious assault.
A Butler County grand jury's indictment on those charges was made public Wednesday, as the victim continued rehabilitation at Middletown Regional Hospital.
Held in the Butler County Jail on $1 million bond, Mr. Engle is scheduled to appear Jan. 14 before Charles Pater, a newly elected Butler County Common Pleas Court judge.
Mr. Engle had been paroled five times since 1982, when he began serving a sentence of four to 25 years for robbing two Middletown businesses, officials said. His parole officer allowed him to remain free despite his arrest on a drug charge July 22, less than a month after he was last paroled.
Middletown police arrested him Nov. 16 and accused him of attacking the woman, who walks with the aid of two canes.
The victim was acquainted with Mr. Engle. So when he showed up at her office, she let him in.
Authorities allege he then raped her, sliced her neck and stole her jewelry and cash.
