One curse of large organizations is that everyone tends to feel like a subordinate, David P. Hanna says in his book Leadership for the Ages: Delivering Today's Results, Building Tomorrow's Legacy. "As soon as we begin to think I'm not in charge, we tend to act out of compliance rather than using our best judgment and doing our best in all situation," he says. "We stop thinking about the purpose of our work, being content to merely do our job." He calls for a paradigm shift from subordinate to stewardship.

Today's company: Libertas Technologies LLC
Friendly Cyber-Systems: After selling their first company, Definiti, Dave Hatter and Tim Bankes formed Libertas in 2001. The Fort Wright company designs Web sites, but its focus is developing data-rich but easy-to-use Internet and Intranet systems as well as "Extranet" sites that incorporate features for both internal and external audiences. Customer needs are given highest priority.
Staffing Up: Currently Libertas's owners enhance their own capabilities by using a network of subcontractors. In the coming year they plan to begin hiring fulltime staff.
Print Expertise: Mr. Hatter is under contract with SAMS publishing to contribute four chapters to "Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Development Unleashed." His chapters focus on Java, XML and security. The book is a guide to the advanced features of Domino 6 and is designed for experienced Notes and Domino application developers.
Electronic Tracking: The partners designed an intranet system for Kroger stores nationwide that freed the grocery store chain from its paper-based method of noting store-to-store inventory shifts. The new system tracks the ups and downs of stock more quickly and with improved accuracy.
