DAYTON, Ohio - Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will lose 146 civilian jobs without any layoffs, said the head of the Air Force Materiel Command.
The command, which maintains and supplies warplanes and weapons systems, is headquartered at Wright-Patterson but has workers at bases and depots around the country.
The command nationwide will lose 892 civilian jobs by October and will eliminate another 1,219 positions by 2009, Gen. Lester Lyles told the Dayton Daily News.
The command will meet the initial round of cuts by eliminating jobs as people leave or retire, Mr. Lyles said.
He said he hopes the command will be able to make all of the reductions without forcing people from their jobs.
"My bottom line is we won't be sending anyone out the door," Mr. Lyles said.
About 22,000 people work at Wright-Patterson, including contractors.
Mr. Lyles said this work-force reduction is separate from a reduction already under way within the Wright-Pat's Aeronautical Systems Center, where 38 civilians are to be laid off.
