Kings warm up for Lakers
Christmas Day showdown looms
The Associated Press
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Their losing streak snapped, the Sacramento Kings can finally turn their full attention to the Los Angeles Lakers. Chris Webber had 20 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four blocks Sunday night, leading the Kings to a 103-88 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
The Kings next game with be Christmas Day against the Lakers in a rematch of last year's thrilling, seven-game Western Conference final. Los Angeles won that series and also eliminated the Kings from the playoffs the previous two years, helping to fuel the rivalry.
By the fourth quarter, the fans at Arco Arena were chanting, "Beat L.A! Beat L.A!"
"I know a lot of people who are having Kings-Lakers parties, its like the Super Bowl," Webber said. "Its a big game, definitely. But we cant get too carried away. Its more important for the Lakers. They need to get going."
This preseason added to the rivalry when Doug Christie and the Lakers Rick Fox traded punches.
"Its a game everyone wants to watch," Warriors guard Jason Richardson said. "I know Im planning on watching the whole game. Its one of those games that will probably come down to a last shot."
That certainly was not the case Sunday when the Kings posted their 12th straight win over the Warriors, dating back to March 9, 1998.
Golden State lost its second straight and has dropped five of six. They never led against the Kings, playing poor defense and having a season-low 13 assists.
"With them, everybody is touching it and having fun," Warrior guard Gilbert Arenas said. "With us, we get mad when we have to make a pass. We cant score and we dont play defense."
Sacramento led by 13 points at the half and broke it open in the third quarter. Mike Bibby scored eight points in the third when the Kings held the poor-shooting Warriors to 12 points and took a 77-57 lead into the final period.
Looking for a fast start following two consecutive losses, the Kings led 32-20 after one quarter and were ahead 58-45 by halftime.
"We came out and started the game really aggressive," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "We were a little low in the second quarter, but other than that I thought we did everything we had to do to get this win tonight."
In his best game since coming back from an injury, Peja Stojakovic had 20 points. Bobby Jackson scored 17 points and Bibby had 13 points and six assists as the Kings won for the first time in three games with him back in the lineup.
Antawn Jamison scored 20 points for the Warriors, who shot 36 percent and had just 13 assists. Richardson struggled early, but finished with 18 points.
Adonal Foyle had 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Mike Dunleavy and Earl Boykins both scored 10 for the Warriors, who have lost 17 of 18 games at Arco Arena.
"Sacramento hurt us the whole game with a variety of things," Warriors coach Eric Mussleman said. "It is pretty difficult to win on the road against the best home team in the league. I would rather travel to China and play a game in front of 2,000 people than travel and hour and a half to play in this building."
The Warriors played without reserve forward Chris Mills, who was suspended for three games for his role in the altercation Friday against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Notes: Jamison has started 191 games, the third longest active streak in the NBA. ... Webber had 16 points and seven rebounds by halftime. ... Christie, who leads the league in steals, has two or more in the last 10 games. ... The Warriors shot 2-for-18 in the third quarter.
