Elite orchestra
Princeton Junior High School seventh-graders Brad Fillion and Avni Patel were chosen by audition to be members of the Cincinnati Junior Strings for the 2002-03 school year. The Strings is an elite orchestra sponsored by the preparatory department of the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music.
College leader
Henry Sweets, son of Joan and Thomas Sweets of Indian Hill, was inducted into the Order of Gownsmen at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. The honorary student organization recognizes the university's ties with the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge and appoints students to legislative, academic and faculty committees. As a symbol of leadership, members wear black academic gowns to classes.
Math competition
Members of the Lakota West High School chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, a National Mathematics Honor Society, participated in the annual Mu Alpha Theta National Convention at Mississippi State University in Starkville. The teams received 41 awards out of 55 competitions.
Scoring in the top five in the Mu (students who have taken Calculus) division were: Raj Doshi, first in Probability; and Noha Elmouelhi, fifth in Chalk Talk.
Scoring in the top five in the Alpha (no math classes higher than Pre-Calculus) division was Klirk Bhasavanich, fifth in Trigonometry.
Scoring in the top five in the Theta (no classes higher than Algebra 2) division was Mitchell Wang, second in Sequence and Theories, fourth in Calculator Programming and fifth in Number Theory.
In team competitions: Raghav Tadepalli, Raj, Noha and Mitchell placed second in the Hustle; Jing-Jing Mao, Gabriela Torres and Noha placed third in Scrapbook.
Kevin Klocke, Pam Loebig, Cailin Falato and Katie Spott (Lakota East High School) placed fourth in the Theta State Bowl.
Amir Manji, Dan Janosik, Andrew Dean (Lakota East) and Noha placed fourth in the Mu State Bowl; and Arun Nagaraj, Xiaobo Dong, Amir and Klirk placed fifth in the Mu-Alpha Math Quest.
