Temple 71, No. 10 Indiana 64

IU becomes more unsettled

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Awaiting an expected lengthy suspension, Mike Davis figures his team already is paying for his tirade.

"I'll take the blame for this loss," Davis said Saturday after the No. 10 Hoosiers' 71-64 loss to Temple. "I took a pretty good basketball team and screwed them up the last two weeks."

The Indiana coach is expected to be suspended Monday by the Big Ten Conference for charging onto the court and confronting an official in the final second of a loss to Kentucky on Dec. 21.

Davis is waiting for the Big Ten to make a decision.

"I wish they would just come down and say something," Davis said. "Then we can move on.

"One of the players asked me, 'Coach, did you kill somebody?' I understand what I did was wrong. It was out of character and I embarrassed the program, but am I the first coach to do this?"

Alex Wesby and Maurice Collins each hit two free throws in the final 21 seconds to win it for the Owls (2-6). Indiana (8-2) has lost two in a row after winning its first eight.

"We just weren't ready to play today," said Indiana's Bracey Wright, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. "I don't think it had anything to do with Coach."

Keith Butler's offensive rebound led to two free throws by Collins that put Temple ahead 67-63 with 21.4 seconds to go. Wright missed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left, and the Owls got the rebound. Wesby made two free throws with 3.4 seconds left.

Wesby finished with 26 points, Collins added 16, and Antywane Robinson had a career-high 13 rebounds for the Owls.

"When (Wesby's) hitting, he's hard to stop," Temple coach John Chaney said. "He's so uncanny the way he plays the game."

Kyle Hornsby scored 12 points, and Jeff Newton added 11 for the Hoosiers.

Trailing 59-58, Temple scored seven straight. A jumper by David Hawkins made it 65-59 with 2:25 to go.

A putback by Wright and two free throws by Newton with 1:14 left pulled the Hoosiers to 65-63.

After Wright hit a 3-pointer to start the second half, Temple scored 18 of the next 23 points to take a 52-44 lead with 14:13 left.

The Hoosiers later went on a 12-4 run with a 3-pointer by Wright putting them ahead by one, 59-58, with 6:15 to go.

Indiana made nine 3-pointers in the first half to take a 36-34 lead at the break.
