UK will introduce football coach today

The Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky will introduce its new football coach Monday, amid reports that former Oregon and St. Louis Rams head coach Rich Brooks was hired.

Associate athletic director Greg Byrne said Sunday the school will make an announcement, but he would not confirm Brooks has the job. Byrne did say that Brooks was in town Sunday.

"I'd rather not say any more than that," said Byrne, the son of former Oregon athletic director Bill Byrne. Brooks worked with Byrne for 11 years at Oregon.

Brooks did not immediately return messages left Sunday at his Oregon home and on his cell phone. His wife told the Courier-Journal of Louisville on Saturday that her husband was taking the job. CBS Sports reported Saturday Brooks would join Kentucky.

Guy Morriss resigned Dec. 9 to become the coach at Baylor.

Brooks coached Oregon from 1977-94, leading the Ducks to their first Rose Bowl in his final season. Brooks coached the NFL's Rams in 1995-96, and he was fired with a 13-19 record.

He was the Atlanta Falcons' defensive coordinator from 1997-00, then resigned in January 2001. He's been out of coaching since.

Kentucky went 7-5 this season but was banned from a bowl game because of NCAA sanctions. The program faces two more years of probation and scholarship reductions in the aftermath of recruiting violations committed under Morriss' predecessor, Hal Mumme.
