Investigations by the Covington Fire Department and the Kentucky State Police will determine the future of a veteran firefighter.Capt. John Scott Rigney, 33, of Park Hills, was charged with drinking and driving Dec. 30 after crashing his truck head-on into Edwin M. McDowell's car on Ky. 9, the AA highway, in Bracken County.

Mr. McDowell, 39, of Dover, was pronounced dead at the scene. Capt. Rigney was taken to Meadow View Regional Hospital in Maysville and released the next day.

The wreck occurred just before 10 p.m. near Augusta.

The investigation is ongoing, but Capt. Rigney could be charged with vehicular homicide, Bracken County police said.

Capt. Rigney has been with the Covington Fire Department for 12 years and is on active duty.

"We are conducting an investigation," said Joe Heringhaus, Covington fire chief.

"He has not been suspended yet. We will wait until it goes to court, of course. We will deal with it depending on the outcome of the case."
