Who's Hot & Who's Not
WHO'S HOT
Darnell Archey
Butler's senior guard can set the NCAA record for consecutive free throws made today at Illinois-Chicago. The 6-foot-1 Archey made his 73rd straight free throw Monday, tying the current record. He hasn't missed a foul shot since his sophomore season.
Gary Buchanan
Villanova's guard, who now shares the record for consecutive free throws made with Archey, can become the best foul shooter in NCAA history. Buchanan, a senior, entered this season with a career free throw average of 92.7 percent. The mark to beat is 90.9.
Big 12
Almost half the league is ranked in the Top 25, and among those that aren't are Iowa State (10-1) and Oklahoma State (9-1). In fact, every team in the league is two games above .500 or better.
WHO'S NOT
No. 1-itis
First, Alabama loses to Utah. Then No.2 Pitt, with a clear opportunity to seize the top ranking, falls to Georgia. Who wants No.1? Bet on Duke to keep it for a while.
Texas Southern women
TCU coach Jeff Mittie knew his team had just played one of its best defensive games, but he didn't realize it was an NCAA record. The Horned Frogs held Texas Southern to 16 points, the fewest allowed in a Division I women's basketball game.
St. John's
The Red Storm started a promising 5-1, but back-to-back losses to Manhattan and North Carolina in the Holiday Festival, held at Madison Square Garden, don't look good heading into the Big East Conference season.
