Question: I have a silk kimono brought back from the Korean War. I've kept it in a chest, but I want to display it in an area that doesn't get any light.
Answer. Sunlight fades fabric, weakens fibers and speeds deterioration, says Anne Bissonnette, curator of the Kent State University Museum.
She recommends hanging the kimono from a pole extending from wrist to wrist. Make the pole from an acid-free cardboard tube wrapped in muslin. You also can frame the kimono behind UV-filtering glass or clear plastic.
