Valpo tries, but Notre Dame survives
Top 25 roundup
The Associated Press
CHICAGO - Valparaiso's Greg Tonagel missed a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left, and No. 6 Notre Dame came up with the ball in the scrum afterward to seal a 55-53 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday at the United Center.
"We were very fortunate to get out of here with a win," Irish coach Mike Brey said.
Matt Carroll led Notre Dame with 14 points, and Dan Miller and Torin Francis added 12 each. Francis had 10 rebounds as Notre Dame won its eighth straight game.
The Irish (12-1) are off to their best start in 24 years, matching the mark of the 1978-79 squad.
But with 13 turnovers and shooting less than 44 percent, this was hardly a stellar effort for the Irish. And it certainly won't cut it Monday night, when they visit No.2 Pittsburgh for their Big East opener.
"This makes us a little bit hungry going into Big East play," Carroll said.
But Valparaiso made Notre Dame work for it. After trailing the Irish by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Crusaders were looking for another big shot.
Valpo went first to Joaquim Gomes, who had made a 3-pointer with 1:07 to play, but he was tied up. So the Crusaders kicked the ball out to Tonagel, their best 3-point shooter, who was scoreless on three previous shots.
But Miller rushed at Tonagel, trying to throw off his shot.
"I knew it was long," Tonagel said. "I was hoping to get a lucky bounce."
The ball hit off the rim, and the Irish wrestled the ball from the Crusaders and ran out the clock.
Gomes led Valparaiso (5-7) with a career-high 17 points. Roberto Nieves added a career-high 11.

No. 4 Arizona 80, Oregon St. 65 CORVALLIS, Ore. - Freshman guard Hassan Adams scored 14 points to lead No. 4 Arizona to a 80-65 victory over Oregon State on Saturday night.
Rick Anderson, called upon to replace injured forward Luke Walton, had 13 points for the Wildcats, who opened their Pacific-10 season with a sweep of the Oregon schools for the first time since 1997-98. Jason Gardner added 12 points.
Arizona (9-1, 2-0) was coming off a dramatic come-from-behind 81-72 victory Thursday night over No. 9 Oregon.
The Beavers (7-4, 0-2), coming off a 67-47 loss at home to Arizona State in their Pac-10 opener, gave the Wildcats little trouble.
Philip Ricci led the Beavers with 24 points as Oregon State extended its losing streak against Top 25 teams to 17 games.
Arizona led by as many as 21 points at several times in the second half, including a 71-50 advantage when Anderson hit a jumper with 6:05 to go.
It was Oregon State first-year head coach Jay John's first meeting against his former boss, Arizona's Lute Olson. John served as an assistant at Arizona for the last four seasons.
Walton sprained his right ankle Monday night in the Wildcats' 85-71 victory over Boston University in the Fiesta Bowl Classic. He suited up against the Beavers but spent the game on the bench.
The Beavers led 11-9 in the first half, but Arizona went on a 12-0 run - capped by Anderson's 3-pointer - to go up 21-11.
The only time the Beavers were a threat after that was when Floyd North pulled them within six at 25-19 with 5:54 left in the first half.
The Wildcats led 43-25 at halftime behind Anderson's 11 points.
The last time the Wildcats played the Beavers, Gardner scored a career-high 34 points in Arizona's 93-87 victory on Jan. 6, 2002.
No. 9 Oregon 94, Arizona St. 73
EUGENE, Ore. - Luke Ridnour needed a half to find his groove. When he did, the rest of his teammates followed.
Ridnour scored 24 points - 21 in the second half - as No. 9 Oregon rallied to beat Arizona State 94-73.
Oregon trailed 39-33 at halftime but shot 81 percent in the second half to outscore the Sun Devils 61-34. Included in that offensive output was a 25-2 run that turned a five-point deficit into a 69-51 advantage with 8:46 left to play.
Ridnour scored 10 points during the Ducks' decisive run, while reserve forward Jay Anderson added eight of his 10 points. It was Luke Jackson, however, who put Oregon (10-2, 1-1 Pac-10) up for good with a dunk off a long pass from Robert Johnson for a 52-51 lead. Jackson finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
"(The run) just shows the guts of this team," Ridnour said. "We could've folded easily."
The Ducks didn't, and they gave credit after the game to their junior point guard.
"Ridnour just took over the game," Anderson said. "He hit three or four straight shots. When he drove the lane, nobody could stop him."
Arizona State freshman center Ike Diogu led the Sun Devils (9-4, 1-1) with 27 points and eight rebounds. However, Diogu, who made 40 of 44 free throws in Arizona State's last six games, was only 11-for-16 against the Ducks.
The Sun Devils had won five straight, but were overwhelmed by Oregon's sensational shooting performance in the second half. The Ducks went 21-of-28 from the field, including seven 3-pointers. It was the most points allowed in a half by Arizona State since Southern California scored 67 in 1998.
"In the second half, every shot was a perfect shot, every shot had perfect timing," Oregon coach Ernie Kent said.
Arizona State shot 48 percent from the field in the second half but missed on all six of its 3-point attempts and made only 14 of 24 free throws.
"We didn't focus on making free throws, so we didn't make any," Diogu said.
