Turfway Derbypreps begin
The Enquirer and wire reports
Graded stakes winner Champali outdueled undefeated favorite Great Notion throughout the 6‡-furlong race to prevail by a nose in Saturday's $50,000 Turfway Prevue at Turfway Park.
The race kicked off the track's four-race series for 3-year-olds, which culminates with the Grade II $500,000 Lane's End Stakes on March 22.
Mr. Whitestone finished 2 æ lengths back in third. The winning time was 1:17.53 over a muddy track.
Casino Red and KK Avey completed the field, which was knocked down to five starters with the scratches of Faxer Than You, Chicken Soup Kid and Miner Moss.
"What a great race," winning trainer Greg Foley said. "I wasn't sure we were going to get there. ... That other horse (Great Notion) kept digging in. They are both class horses."
"It took forever to get there," winning jockey James Lopez said.
Champali, winner of the Grade III Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs as a 2-year-old, improved his record to four wins in five starts and has earned $155,874 for owner Lloyd Madison Farms, LLC.
The Kentucky-bred Glitterman colt returned $4.60 and $2.20 at 6-5 odds. There was no show wagering.
The next race in the series for 3-year-olds will be the $50,000 WEBN Stakes at 1 mile Feb. 1.
HORSE OF THE YEAR: Joining Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Azeri as an Eclipse Award Horse of the Year finalist are the ill-fated Whitney Handicap winner Left Bank, European superstar and Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up Rock of Gibraltar and Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem.
