Hamilton thrilled as president visits school

Ohio Moments

On Jan. 8, 2002, President Bush signed a landmark, bipartisan education bill during a ceremony at Hamilton High School in Butler County. The "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001" was drafted to reform the education system and to establish accountability measures for under-performing schools. It authorized $26.9 billion in annual federal spending on education - $4 billion more than the previous fiscal year. At the heart of the program was a series of state-administered reading and math tests. Also present was Rep. John Boehner, chairman of the House Education Committee, in whose district the ceremony took place.
