FINNEYTOWN - The Rev. John E. Filippine, pastor of St. Vivian Parish in Finneytown, died Saturday of cancer at the Colerain Township home of his sister, Carol Ann Schnur. He was 70.
"Father Filippine spent many years as a popular, competent high school teacher and even more years as a well-loved pastor," said the Rev. Malcolm Grad, vice chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
Father Filippine taught English and religion at Fenwick High School from 1958 to 1963, then at Springfield Catholic High School in Urbana, Ohio.
From 1971 to 1975 was assistant pastor at Our Lord Christ the King Parish in Mount Lookout and taught at Purcell and McNicholas high schools.
His became associate pastor at Ascension Parish in 1975 and pastor at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish, both in Dayton, Ohio, in 1976.
He came to St. Vivian in 1986.
Survivors include another sister, Mary Helen Jackson, also of Colerain Township.
Reception of the body is 4 p.m. today with visitation until 8 p.m. at St. Vivian Church, 7600 Winton Road.
The funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains, 325 W. Eighth St., downtown. Burial is at Old St. Joseph Cemetery in Price Hill.
