Jordan makes Hill look
over the hill

WASHINGTON - It was sad success for Michael Jordan, going one-on-one against the ailing Grant Hill. Jordan attacked, forcing Hill to run through screens with a bad ankle. Jordan scored 28 points by halftime, and Hill was done for the night.

Jordan finished with 32 as the Washington Wizards beat the Orlando Magic 108-93 Thursday night. Hill scored just two points in 12 minutes and could be facing another extended absence from the game.

"I feel so bad for the kid," Jordan said, "where he's in the peak of his career, and he's dealing with the injuries he has to deal with. The unfortunate part is when you're on the court, you can't focus on it, you have to attack it."

Before the game, Hill spoke optimistically about his ankle, which has chronic tendinitis after three surgeries in three years and has caused him to miss 12 games this season. He said his new specially made shoes gave him no soreness in Monday night's game against Detroit, and that he now felt he could make it through the rest of the season.

After the game, coach Doc Rivers said it might be time to give the six-time All-Star another extended rest.

"I think it's a decision we really have to give some thought to. ... He tried to go. We could see early on, he was struggling moving, so we shut him down," Rivers said.

Hill did not comment to reporters after the game.

The Wizards beat the Magic for the first time in three meetings this season in a game between two .500 teams expected to battle for playoff position in April. Washington recovered from a lifeless 84-75 home loss to undermanned Toronto on Tuesday.

"We were really mad from the other night," said Christian Laettner, who scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. "We just regrouped. We realized this was a big game. We're both right there for playoff position."

The Wizards also proved they can be competitive without injured leading scorer Jerry Stackhouse, whose left groin injury could keep him out anywhere from a week to a month. Hughes and the front court combinations of Brendan Haywood, Kwame Brown, Etan Thomas and Laettner more than compensated.

Hughes, Haywood and Brown who did all the scoring in the key 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter. Hughes scored nine of his 22 points in the fourth, Haywood had five of his season-high 16 points, and Brown scored all of his nine points in the final period.

"Our big men were responsible for that win," coach Doug Collins said. "When they were trying to come over and help on Michael, our big guys did a good job of finding the open areas and finishing. We played as good a game as you could play without Jerry."

Tracy McGrady scored 31 points for the Magic, who overcame a 16-point first-half deficit but fell apart with just one field goal in the first 4:59 of the final period.

"We were playing catch-up," Rivers said. "You dig a huge hole for yourself, and then you spend the whole game trying to get back. Even though the game was tied, you use up so much energy. T-Mac expended about everything you had. He goes out. By the time, he comes back in, the game's over already."

Haywood's game came on the day that he was overlooked in favor of Chicago's Tyson Chandler on the rosters for the NBA's rookie-sophomore game during All-Star Weekend.

"They just pick people randomly, huh?" said Haywood, when told of Chandler's selection.
