NBA Today

By The Associated Press

SCOREBOARD

Saturday, Jan. 18

Chicago at Miami (8 p.m. EST). Jay Williams and the Bulls look for their second road win of the season against the Heat.

STARS

Friday

- Steve Francis, Rockets, had a career-high 44 points as Houston beat the Los Angeles Lakers 108-104 in overtime.

- Stephon Marbury, Suns, had 41 points, 11 assists and no turnovers as Phoenix beat Dallas 107-102.

- Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker, Celtics, scored 31 points apiece as Boston beat Indiana 98-93.

- Tim Duncan, Spurs, had 27 points and nine rebounds in San Antonio's 106-93 win over Atlanta.

- David Wesley, Hornets, scored a season-high 34 points to help New Orleans to a 90-83 victory over Chicago.

- Gary Payton, SuperSonics, scored seven of his 27 points in overtime as Seattle beat Memphis 103-97.

YAO MAKES A STATEMENT

Yao Ming blocked Shaquille O'Neal's first three shots, altered Kobe Bryant's attempt at the end of regulation and dunked with 10.2 seconds left for the biggest basket of the night as Houston beat the Los Angeles Lakers 108-104 in overtime Friday night. O'Neal finished with the better stat line - 31 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to Yao's 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.

BIG LITTLE MAN

Earl Boykins put on an amazing show with a career-high 28 points and eight assists as Golden Warriors beat Minnesota 107-98 Friday night. The 5-foot-5 Boykins scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, exasperating Minnesota with his usual array of feathery jumpers, daredevil drives and clever passes.

MARBURY BEATS MAVS

Stephon Marbury had 41 points, 11 assists and no turnovers in 46 minutes as Phoenix handed Dallas its second loss in a row, 107-102 Friday night. The Suns made 10 of 19 3-pointers - 4-of-6 by Marbury - to win their 11th straight at home.

AROUND THE WORLD

The Dallas Mavericks completed the paperwork to sign 6-foot-7 swingman Antoine Rigaudeau of France from the Italian League. Rigaudeau will be in uniform Sunday against Seattle. He joins Dirk Nowitzki (Germany), Steve Nash (Canada) and Eduardo Najera (Mexico) on the Mavericks' roster.

WEBBER WOES

Chris Webber faces additional charges on accusations he lied to a grand jury about his dealings with a Michigan basketball booster. The new indictment Friday charges the Sacramento Kings star, his father Mayce Webber Jr. and aunt Charlene Johnson with nine counts, including conspiracy to obstruct justice and perjury. They are accused of lying to a federal grand jury about their dealings with ex-booster Eddie Martin.

SOMEBODY HAD TO WIN

Juwan Howard had 25 points and eight rebounds, leading Denver to a 97-80 win over Cleveland on Friday night in a matchup of the NBA's two worst teams.

PERSON RETURNS

Guard Wesley Person, recovered from a broken right index finger, was activated by the Memphis Grizzlies in time for Friday night's game in Seattle. When Person was hurt Dec. 30, he was the top 3-point shooter in the NBA at 52.3 percent.

SPEAKING

"How should I put it: We beat the Lakers today, but Shaq is still Shaq. He's like a truck." - Houston's Yao Ming after the Rockets beat the Lakers 108-104 in overtime Friday night.
