Trophy Stakes today at Turfway
Gowell Stakes winner Wildcat Annie, owner by Tracy Farmer, trained by Bernie Flint and ridden by Tony D'Amico, heads a field of newly turned 3-year-old fillies in today's 6 ‡ furlong $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes.
TRIPLE CROWN TRAIL HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Two unbeaten colts will be on the flanks to start Saturday's Holy Bull Stakes, the first big test at Gulfstream Park for this year's Triple Crown hopefuls.
Reigning Canadian 2-year-old champion Added Edge, who won all four starts last year, is the 7-2 favorite and drew the first post in the field of 13. New York-bred Funny Cide, 3-for-3 in 2002, drew post 13 for the 1 1-16 mile race - which his trainer considered bad luck.
"It's a horrible post on a track as tight as this one," Barclay Tagg said. "I considered scratching him, but I probably won't. He has come up to this race perfectly. If I don't run him Saturday, who knows if he'll be this sharp two or three weeks down the road?"
Horses breaking from the eighth post out won only twice in the first 62 distance races this year at Gulfstream. Even so, Funny Cide is the third choice at 6-1.
The $100,000 Holy Bull is a prep for the $200,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 15.
Added Edge will be ridden by Patrick Husbands, who has been on him in all his starts. Jose Santos has ridden Funny Cide from the beginning.
Remsen Stakes runner-up Bham, with John R. Velasquez aboard, is the second choice at 4-1.
The field includes two colts from the barn of Ken McPeek - Not for Profit (20-1 with Edgar Prado aboard) and Powerful Touch (8-1, Jorge Chavez).
"Not For Profit started to blossom when he got to run around two turns," McPeek said. "This will be his first major test, but I know he'll handle the distance. Powerful Touch has only run three times, and he hasn't been two turns. He certainly acts like a horse who will go long."
McPeek plans to run another prospect, Ten Cents A Shine, in the Fountain of Youth. The trainer won the Belmont Stakes last year with 70-1 shot Sarava.
Added Edge raced three times at Woodbine and once at Belmont, winning them all decisively by an average of five lengths.
The rest of the field includes Christmas Away (Pat Day), opening at 8-1; Spite The Devil (Jerry Bailey) at 10-1; Boston Park (Rene Douglas), Offlee Wild (Mark Guidry), Seek Gold (Eibar Coa) and Patriotic Flame (Cornelio Velasquez) at 12-1; and Flank Attack (Roger Velez) and Supervisor (Gary Boulanger) at 20-1.
