NOT AGAIN Michal Handzus, who beat New York with a penalty-shot goal in overtime in the teams' last meeting, capitalized on a turnover by Mark Messier to score the go-ahead goal Sunday night in the Flyers' 4-2 win. Messier had the puck to the right of the New York goal, but lost it to Handzus, who came around and tucked his 14th goal into the net.
ABOUT TIME Alexei Yashin scored in consecutive games for the first time since mid-October and added a third-period assist to help the New York Islanders beat Atlanta 4-1 Sunday.
NEW COACH, SAME THRASHERS The New York Islanders ended Atlanta's three-game winning streak Sunday, beating the Thrashers 4-1 to give new coach Bob Hartley his first loss with Atlanta. The Thrashers have never won four straight in their four-year history.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME Vancouver's 4-1 win at Detroit was the Canucks' first regular-season win in Detroit since Feb. 6, 1997. Vancouver beat the Red Wings twice at Joe Louis Arena during the first round of last season's Stanley Cup playoffs and won at Vancouver earlier this season.
PING! Detroit players hit five posts or crossbars in their 4-1 loss to Vancouver on Sunday night, including a penalty shot attempt by Holmstrom with 3:38 left after Murray Baron interfered with him on a breakaway. Sergei Fedorov hit two and Darren McCarty and Luc Robitaille each hit one.
SPEAKING "It's not for The Family Channel." - Philadelphia coach Ken Hitchcock on his speech to the Flyers after they were outshot 18-8 in the first period of their 4-2 win over the New York Rangers.
