Some Good News

Grant buys fitness gear for school

map

About $200,000 worth of strength and aerobics training equipment will be installed next month at McAuley High School, 6000 Oakwood Ave., College Hill, in its new equipment room.

The school received a grant from the National School Fitness Foundation to be used for its physical education classes by coaches, athletic teams, alumnae, staff and the public.

The LIFT (Leadership In Fitness Training) America program will start classes during the second semester of this school year.

Classes will include alternating strength and aerobics machines and apparatus three times a week. Strength improvement will be documented.

The school's new equipment room is part of its "The Future Is Now" capital campaign.

McAuley is the only parochial school in Cincinnati to receive the grant.

The school also will celebrate the end of Life Week with a Mass at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the school auditorium.

Tracie Metzger, one of the founders of the Pink Ribbon Girls, will be the featured speaker. The Pink Ribbon Girls is a group of young breast cancer survivors.

Today is the last day for nominations for the YWCA's 2003 Career Women of Achievement Awards.

Nominations may be dropped off at the YWCA office, 898 Walnut St. downtown. Applications may be picked up at the office or online at www.ywcacincinnati.org.

Applications for the YWCA's Mamie Earl Sells Scholarship will be accepted through Jan. 28. The scholarship is awarded each year to an African-American female high school senior entering a post-secondary institution.

The scholarship committee will look at academic records, high school class rank, ACT and SAT scores, special talents, involvement in extracurricular activities and community service.

The scholarship is in honor of the late Mrs. Sells for her commitment and service to YWCA and the community.

Scholarship and career achievement winners will be honored at a luncheon, May 6 at the Albert B. Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center.

Anna Quindlen, a Pulitzer Prize winner and novelist, will be keynote speaker.

For more information about the luncheon, call 361-2126.
