Oregon's Jackson sidelined

The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon forward Luke Jackson is expected to miss Saturday's game against Washington State because of a deep cut to his right hand.

Jackson, hurt in Thursday night's 91-66 victory over Washington, will have the injury reevaluated next week. His status for games at UCLA and Southern California next week is uncertain.

"We'll just wait and see," coach Ernie Kent said. "Obviously, we don't want to bring him back too soon."

Jackson, a left-hander, received about a dozen stitches to the base of his right ring finger after he cut it the first quarter. He appeared to cut his finger when he caught it on Washington forward Doug Wrenn's jersey in a steal attempt.

Blood covered Jackson's hand and dripped onto the floor at McArthur Court as he was whisked to the locker room by trainers. When Jackson returned to the bench, his hand was bandaged and he was wearing a sling.

Jackson, a 6-foot-7 junior, was averaging 17.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists a game for the Ducks (13-4, 3-3 Pacific-10). He is the only player to rank in the Pac-10's current top 10 standings for points, rebounds, assists and steals.

He has 1,079 career points to rank 20th on Oregon's career scoring list.

NOTRE DAME

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Pilot error led to the Notre Dame basketball team landing at the wrong airport this week on its return trip from Providence, R.I., a spokesman for the charter airline said Friday.

The 50-seat charter plane landed at Elkhart Municipal Airport instead of South Bend Regional Airport around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after Notre Dame beat Providence 71-65 on Tuesday night.

The two airports are about 12 miles apart. Towers for both airports were closed at the time.

"It was a simple mistake," said Warren Wilkinson, vice president for government affairs and corporate communications for Chautauqua Airlines, based in Indianapolis. "As soon as they got on the ground they realized they were at the wrong airport and departed for South Bend."

Wilkinson said the crew was in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration traffic center and requested an instrument approach to South Bend and was told it was not available and that radar had been suspended for the evening. He said the crew also was told that a "localizer," another landing tool, also was not available.

"So the crew asked for a visual approach and the Chicago center cleared them," Wilkinson said. "They were told they should be able to see the airport at 12 o'clock. The crew responded that they had the airport in sight."

The problem was, the airport in sight was Elkhart, not South Bend.

Elkhart airport director Andrew Maksymovitch said it is understandable how the mistake could occur, although he is unaware of it ever happening before.

"Our airports are lined up and only a matter of a few miles apart, so from a distance, if our runway had our lights on and their runway had their lights on, it could be difficult to tell the difference," Maksymovitch said.

South Bend airport director John Schalliol also said he had never heard about any other crew confusing the two airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating, spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said.

Wilkinson said the crew had not followed some "internal regulations," but declined to specify what those were. He said the matter will be handled internally.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey didn't appear too upset about the mistake.

"I was just glad it wasn't Cedar Rapids," he said.
