Apprentice McKee OK after spill at 'Big A'
The Enquirer and wire reports
John McKee, 21, of Hamersville, Ohio, one of three finalists for the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in North America in 2002, was treated and released from a Long Island hospital Friday after being thrown from his mount and landing on his head and shoulder during the third race at Aqueduct in New York.
"I wanted to go back and ride the last race today, but they wouldn't let me," he said.
McKee won riding titles at River Downs and Turfway Park last season and broke apprentice jockey records of Walton's Steve Cauthen at River Downs and Churchill Downs before moving his tack to New York this winter.
McKee is fifth in the Aqueduct jockey standings. He will fly to Los Angeles to attend the Eclipse Awards banquet Monday night.
TURFWAY PARK: Leading rider Jason Lumpkins won five races on one card for the second time this year, capturing races one, two and five through seven Friday night. He rode seven of the night's 10 races and also had one second-place finish.
Lumpkins, who moved his tack to Kentucky in November after a successful stint on the Northern California circuit, first became one of just 10 riders in Turfway Park's 44-year history to win five races on one card Jan. 5.
Perennial leading trainer Bernie Flint, who finished first and fourth in the Jan. 1 Holiday Cheer Stakes with Ultimate Warrior and Alydelta, respectively, will send the stablemates out as the 7-5 morning line favorites for today's $50,000 Forego Stakes at Turfway Park.
The 6 1/2-furlong race, named in honor of the three-time Horse of the Year, will be the featured 10th of 12 live races that begin at 1:10 p.m.
