Enquirer Tipoff page
Who's hot and who's not? Why did Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan decide to retire after 49 seasons? And what is former UK star Jamal Mashburn doing these days? Find out on! Tipoff, the Enquirer's weekly look at college basketball.
Who's HotArizona
The Wildcats are back on top of the polls, and it looks as if there are few challengers in the Pac-10 to derail Lute Olson's crew. A nonconference game at Kansas today will be a big test, however.
Louisville
The Cardinals are getting it done on defense, holding opponents to less than 40 percent shooting in 10 straight games, all wins. They are tied with Cincinnati for first place in Conference USA at 5-0. Those two meet Feb. 5 at Louisville and Feb. 22 at the Shoe.
Jarvis Hayes
Georgia's junior forward scored 10 of his 23 points in overtime, lifting the Bulldogs to a win over Tennessee Wednesday to keep Georgia No. 1 in the RPI.
Who's NotDuke
Suddenly the Blue Devils are mortal. Two straight ACC road losses moved Duke into the middle of the pack in the conference. The Cameron Crazies will have to provide some therapy today against Georgia Tech.
Juiced basketball players
Texas A&M's Andy Slocum is innocent until proven guilty, but 23 syringes, a methamphetamine pill and a schedule for steroid use found in his truck aren't good signs. When did it become so important for a basketball player to shoot up?
Bo Ellis
Twenty-three wins in five years wasn't enough for the Chicago State administration, which fired Ellis on Wednesday after he compiled a 23-105 record. He fared much better as a player, winning a national title at Marquette in 1977.
SWEET 16
| 1. Arizona | Wildcats back on top, but Pitt is closing in. |
| 2. Pittsburgh | Needs a quality Big East road win to move up. |
| 3. Texas | Faces No.20 Missouri today. |
| 4. Florida | Winning streak stands at 12. |
| 5. Duke | Lost two straight for the first time since 1999. |
| 6. Oklahoma | Clock operator rescued Hollis Price and the rest of the Sooners vs. Texas Tech. |
| 7. Kentucky | Cats could be the SEC's team to beat with a win at Alabama today. |
| 8. Louisville | 13th straight win over DePaul. |
| 9. Maryland | Back in the mix after upsetting Duke. |
| 10. Oklahoma State | Survived an overtime scare from Baylor for its 13th straight win. |
| 11. Indiana | Won three straight without Bracey Wright. |
| 12. Notre Dame | Struggled offensively in a win over Providence. |
| 13. Syracuse | Just two losses, and one of them is at Pitt. |
| 14. Georgia | Bulldogs fighting to stay alive in the competitive SEC. |
| 15. Wake Forest | Loss at Virginia was a surprise for solid Demon Deacons. |
| 16. Creighton | Kyle Korver shooting 1-for-12 isn't going to get it done, even against Evansville. |
TOP FIVEThis week's topic: This season's top five individual scoring performances:
Chris Williams, Ball State: 48 points vs. Akron, Jan. 4.
Keydren Clark, St. Peter's: 48 points vs. Northern Arizona, Nov. 23.
Kevin Martin, Western Carolina: 46 points vs. Coastal Carolina, Nov. 22.

MUST-SEE TV Arizona at Kansas, 1 p.m. today (Ch.12): They were preseason Nos. 1 and 2 in almost every poll and publication. Arizona is clearly better, but Kansas is always tough at home.
Kentucky at Alabama, 8 p.m. today (ESPN): Kentucky is one of the SEC's hottest teams. Alabama has been slipping lately, but the Tide rarely lose at home.
UNLV at New Mexico, 12 a.m. Tuesday (ESPN): Big Monday nightcap should be a good one.
Cincinnati at DePaul, 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (Ch. 19): Cincinnati is rolling through C-USA. See if the Bearcats can keep the trend going.
Butler at Duke, 7 p.m. Thursday (ESPN2): Duke has lost two straight, but this would be a monumental upset. It could happen. You don't want to miss it.
