You Asked For It

By Walt Schaefer

QUESTION: I drive a car pool to Walnut Hills High School and part of my route requires that I turn left from Brewster Avenue onto Montgomery Road. When the light at Brewster and Montgomery turns green for me, traffic also is turning left from Montgomery Road to the southbound Interstate-71 entrance ramp at the same time. As I make the turn, I am not given right-of-way. Motorists turn left in front of me as if they have an arrow to proceed to enter the interstate. Please find out why cars are turning left to the interstate while the light at Brewster and Montgomery is green.

- Gloria Brinkman, Price Hill

ANSWER: Cincinnati Traffic Engineer Steve Bailey said outbound Montgomery Road left turns to I-71 at this signal may be made during gaps in opposing traffic or on an arrow displayed after the yellow signal and all red clearance periods for inbound Montgomery Road traffic. If Ms. Brinkman is turning left from Brewster, she is in violation of the turn restriction and crossing in front of outbound Montgomery Road traffic that has the right-of-way. Mr. Bailey suggested Ms. Brinkman use an alternate route: Right from the I-71 Dana Avenue off ramp, left at Montgomery Road; right to Dauner Avenue; and right on Woodburn Avenue, which also connects to Jonathan.

Q: At the intersection of Second and Elm streets by Paul Brown Stadium, heading downtown on Elm, there are no signs or lane markings indicating which lanes go straight and from which lanes motorists may turn right onto Second.

- Don Sullivan, Madeira

A: Mr. Bailey said the northbound approach to Second from Elm consists of two lanes. As with any other lane approach in the city, right turns are only permitted from the right-most lane. This is true for all unsigned two-lane approaches. Mr. Bailey said the intersection will be studied to see if added signage is necessary.
