Alexander, Bearcats keep home streak alive

The University of Cincinnati won its 21st straight home game, beating Southern Miss 63-51 Friday night at Shoemaker Center.

Carolyn Alexander led UC (16-3, 6-0 Conference USA) with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field; she also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Guard Valerie King added 15 points, and center Debbie Merrill contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Southern Miss (9-9, 2-3) was led by La'Tasha Sumerall and Allison Story with 11 points apiece. Jessica Woods hit double figures with 10 points.

UC, which plays host to Tulane at 3 p.m. Sunday, has the second-longest home win streak in the country.

St. Joseph's 67, Xavier 64

XU's late comeback fell short as the Musketeers lost in Philadelphia.

Freshman Kristy Wallner launched a 3-point try from the top of the key as time expired, but her shot hit off the rim.

XU fell to 13-6 (5-3 Atlantic 10); St. Joseph's is now 12-7 (7-1).

Freshman Tara Boothe led XU with 18 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds for her sixth career double-double. Sophomore Alexis Henderson and seniors Reetta Piipari and Amy Waugh each scored 13 points.

The Hawks scored the first 13 points of the game, as XU needed almost 41/2 minutes to get on the scoreboard. The Hawks were 10-for-16 from the field in their opening run.
