Streaking Champali adds WEBN at Turfway

The Enquirer and wire reports

Prevue Stakes winner Champali passed his second test of the season, drawing off to win Saturday's $50,000 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park by 2 3/4 lengths.

The 1-mile race was the second leg of Turfway's 3-year-old series, which culminates with the $500,000 Grade II Lane's End Stakes on March 22.

"He felt very comfortable," winning rider Jason Lumpkins said. "He could have gone a lot faster and still won, but there was no need. I don't think he'll have any problems as the races get longer."

"He seemed to do it pretty easily," winning trainer Greg Foley said. "Jason did a good job of getting him to relax. When I saw that he had his ears pricked turning for home, I became really confident. I just think we ran the best horse today. We'll keep him here for the John Battaglia (Memorial Stakes on March 1) and then hopefully, the Lane's End. He's done everything we've asked of his so far."

Champali improved his career record to five wins in six starts and has earned $187,174. He returned $3.40, $2.40 and $2.10 as the 3-to-5 favorite.

Chicken Soup Kid, who broke last, rallied along the rail to take second, while Honeagle, who had raced close to the pace, was third.

Last year, Request For Parole edged Perfect Drift to win the race. Request For Parole went on to finish fifth in the Kentucky Derby, and Perfect Drift rebounded from this race to win the Lane's End Spiral and finish third in the Kentucky Derby.
