LEXINGTON - Environmentalists have appealed a decision by the manager of the Daniel Boone National Forest to trade 91 acres in Leslie and Perry counties for 98 acres in Owsley County.
Kentucky Heartwood filed the appeal with the regional forester in Atlanta, asking that the decision by Ben Worthington be overturned.
The swap would allow a Kentucky coal company to mine the Perry County property, which is just more than a mile upstream from Buckhorn Lake.
Several other environmental groups, including Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, joined Kentucky Heartwood in the appeal.
They argued that the land swap would be bad for Buckhorn Lake and that mining upstream would be damaging to the habitat of endangered and threatened species.
