OXFORD - During his 20 years as dean of Miami University's School of Business Administration, Bill R. Moeckel tripled enrollment to rank the school among the nation's top 10 in number of undergraduate majors.

Dr. Moeckel, who held the status of dean emeritus of the School of Business and professor emeritus of management, also secured what was then the school's largest single corporate gift: $1 million in computer hardware and software from Dayton-based NCR Corp.

He also attracted private funding for seven named and two visiting executive professorships, created the Center for Management Development and played an important role in the development of Miami's Marcum Conference Center.

In 1986, Dr. Moeckel received the Benjamin Harrison Medallion, the highest honor given to a faculty member by the university.

Dr. Moeckel, 77, died Sunday at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

During his tenure as dean, the Business Advisory Council, composed of corporate executives, was formed and became a model for other advisory groups at business schools across the country.

Dr. Moeckel also received the AK Morris Award from Miami's alumni association and friends. Colleagues and alumni established a professorship in his honor at his retirement in 1987.

Before joining the Miami faculty in 1967, Dr. Moeckel taught at the University of Missouri, Georgia State College of Business and Ohio State University, where he was associate dean of the College of Commerce and director of continuing education.

He also served as director of the Air Force School of Systems and Logistics at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Dr. Moeckel held bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois.

He was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, serving in the European and Asiatic-Pacific theaters.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; two daughters, Nancy Moeckel of Oxford and Cindy Moeckel of West Hartford, Conn.; a son, Steven Moeckel of Troy, Ohio; four grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Services have been held.

Memorials: Bill R. Moeckel Professorship, Miami University, Advancement Services Building, 926 Chestnut Lane, Oxford, OH 45056.
