To achieve fitness, get your goals in shape first

By Dave Patania

Question: I want to get in shape for this spring and am confused about the process. Which method is best?

Answer: The first thing to remember is that in the fitness world there are few absolutes.

The best approach is to start with the basics and with what works for you.

It is ironic that you mention the word "process," because that is exactly what a successful fitness endeavor is. There are no shortcuts, magic bullets or miracle supplements - just hard work, discipline and consistency.

Begin by figuring out your goals, preferences and time frame. I commend anyone who exercises, but many people waste their time because they don't set goals and develop a plan for how they are going to reach them.

Others fall short of their goals because they use activities and exercises that are either ineffective, unsafe or wrong for their needs.

When potential clients come to me, we go through a process where they explain what they want to accomplish, what preferences they have with regard to exercise and what their schedule allows.

Once we establish what they want, we work to create a program that suits their needs. This is much more effective than hitting the gym with reckless abandon after reading an article on fitness or trying what a friend at work tells you to do.

I recommend you go to your nearest gym or fitness facility and ask one of the experienced fitness professionals help design a program for you. Remember to use the four keys of fitness: cardiovascular training, strength training, flexibility training and disciplined/healthful eating.

If you take the time to determine your goals and needs and make a plan and execute that plan, you will make great strides toward a healthy and fit springtime.
