5 questions with Jason Gardner
You know his team is ranked No.1 for the third time this season. You know he has lived up to the preseason hype that pegged him as the nation's top point guard. But you probably don't know that Arizona's Jason Gardner is a reality-show junkie (The Bachelorette is his favorite). He discussed that, and his thoughts on Arizona's Candygate scandal, in five questions this week with the Enquirer's Dustin Dow.
Q: How many more times are you guys going to be No.1 this season?
A: I really don't know. In a way, it's fun. That's what makes college basketball so interesting and much more exciting. Every week, you have to follow along to see who's at the top. Right now, it seems like being No.1 is some kind of a jinx for us.
Q: Do players fill out NCAA Tournament brackets just for fun?
A: Oh, definitely. That's exciting, going through the bracket, because you know some of the teams first-hand and you might know who should beat who. Everyone puts themselves in the championship game. I do it every year.
Q: You have a chance to go to your second Final Four. Will that put you in a class with Arizona's all-time greats?
A: Just for my name to be mentioned with the likes of Mike Bibby, Sean Elliott, Steve Kerr, it gives me a lot of motivation and confidence. You talk to people about the Final Four, and I'm pretty sure people don't understand how fun and intense it really is until you go there and you're playing in the games. I have to try to not get myself caught up in it all.
Q: Which teams do you follow outside of college basketball?
A: Well, I like the NBA and the NFL and college football. The Colts are my favorite team, because they're my hometown (Indianapolis) team.
Q: How's the candy business going?
A: Man, that's messed up. I'm really glad that whole thing is over. It's funny now, but people will not let it die, so you just have to joke with them. The last road trip we were on, we took a lot of heckling about it in both gyms. I figure wherever we go now - the Pac-10 Tournament, the NCAA Tournament - we're going to hear about it. You just have to get used to it. It's not going to go away.
