Spurs overcome Kobe's 44
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - Another big offensive performance by Kobe Bryant didn't keep the San Antonio Spurs from making NBA history. Tim Duncan had 28 points and 20 rebounds as the Spurs became the first team to win seven consecutive games on one road trip with a 103-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.
"We have been having great group efforts and that is what has been winning games for us," Duncan said. "We are getting defense from all over and it just feels great right now."
Bryant scored 44 points - his eighth straight game with at least 35 - but it wasn't enough to beat San Antonio in a matchup of two streaking teams. Bryant was 19-of-41 from the floor, more than twice the amount of shots taken by teammate Shaquille O'Neal.
"We looked like a one-man team," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I don't think he can be effective at 41 shots. I think 25 is a reasonable number. That was a little bit over the edge."
O'Neal added 21 points but just five rebounds for the Lakers, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped and lost to the Spurs for the third time this season. He missed the first two games while recovering from foot surgery.
"This win really counts when they have Shaq," said Stephen Jackson, who hit two 3-pointers early in the fourth that kept the Spurs ahead by double figures. "We have a lot of guys who can score, and a lot of guys that can contribute to helping Tim. We are just rolling right now and hopefully it keeps going."
The Spurs are 7-1 on their nine-game road trip. They opened with a loss to Minnesota and finish at Sacramento on Sunday. They won this one without center David Robinson, who is back in San Antonio for treatment of a sore right hip.
"We're trying to get things done, whoever we have here," Duncan said. "We've been up and down with injuries and we've just found a way to play without him."
Bryant, who averaged 42 points during the Lakers' streak, struggled in the fourth quarter - when the Lakers trailed by as many as 13.
He let out a groan after missing a free throw with the Lakers down by 10. Then he missed a layup and slapped his hands in frustration. Bryant missed another layup and ended up on the floor under the basket as Malik Rose scored to put the Spurs ahead 85-76.
"They were chippies. It's just about using the finger roll to get it over the lip of the rim," Bryant said. "Defensively, we weren't able to get a hold of their rhythm. Their spacing was excellent and they made big shots."
Pacers 98, Hawks 97
INDIANAPOLIS - Reggie Miller scored 26 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of overtime, to lift the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers over Atlanta.
Miller's final basket, with 10 seconds to go, was his seventh 3-pointer of the game. With 23,184 points, he passed Adrian Dantley for 16th place on the NBA career scoring list.
The Pacers blew a 20-point lead in the third quarter, but Miller hit the go-ahead 3-pointer and Jermaine O'Neal blocked a final shot by Jason Terry just before the buzzer.
O'Neal finished with 16 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks. Brad Miller added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Pacers.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Glenn Robinson led Atlanta with 21 points each. Theo Ratliff added 16 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocked shots.
Warriors 118, Raptors 114, OT
TORONTO - Antawn Jamison scored 32 points and Jason Richardson added 25 as Golden State beat Toronto for its third straight win on the road.
The Warriors led by three with 8.6 seconds left in regulation, but Gilbert Arenas fouled Toronto's Voshon Lenard on an off-balance 3-pointer.
Lenard made all three free throws to tie it with 2.5 seconds left.
Arenas had six of his 15 points in overtime, including four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
Earl Boykins had 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Warriors, who also beat Atlanta and New York on their trip.
Nets 90, Bulls 72
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Kerry Kittles scored 21 points and New Jersey broke out of its post-All-Star break blues with a victory over Chicago.
Richard Jefferson added 20 points as the Nets snapped a two-game losing skid and improved their NBA-best home record to 23-2 by defeating the league's worst road team.
The loss was the Bulls' eighth straight overall, their eighth in a row on the road and their 27th in 29 games away from the United Center. Chicago shot 33.3 percent, committed 23 turnovers and got 38 points from its starting five.
Timberwolves 114, Hornets 93
MINNEAPOLIS - Kevin Garnett had 23 points and eight rebounds in three quarters, and Troy Hudson added 22 points to lead Minnesota over New Orleans.
The Timberwolves hit a season-high 12 of 19 shots from 3-point range (63 percent) in earning their 15th win in 19 games and 11th in a row at home.
David Wesley scored 21 points for the Hornets, including 15 in the first quarter.
Minnesota's Wally Szczerbiak finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Mavericks 110, Memphis 103
MEMPHIS, Tenn. AP) - Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and Michael Finley added 29 as Dallas ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Memphis.
Nowitzki went 12-of-19 from the field. The Grizzlies have lost eight of nine.
The Mavericks led by 11 early in the final period, but Memphis closed to 100-98 with 4:17 to play on two free throws by Mike Batiste.
Shawn Bradley scored the next six points, giving Dallas a 106-99 lead. Bradley had 10 of his 12 points in the fourth period. Steve Nash had 16 points for Dallas.
Memphis was led by Pau Gasol with 25 points, and Jason Williams had 15.
76ers 99, Magic 98
PHILADELPHIA - Allen Iverson scored 20 points, including a free throw with 2.9 seconds left, leading the Philadelphia 76ers.
Derrick Coleman added a season-high 22 points and Eric Snow had 17, including four free throws in the final minute for Philadelphia, which has won two straight since the All-Star break.
Tracy McGrady had 37 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds left, and Mike Miller added a season-high 33 for Orlando.
The Magic have lost seven of nine.
After McGrady's 3 over Aaron McKie tied it at 98, Iverson was fouled by Darrell Armstrong as he drove to the basket.
Iverson hit his first free throw, but missed the second one. Miller got the rebound, but threw the ball out of bounds while trying to pass it.
Bucks 96, Bucks 86
MILWAUKEE- Tim Thomas scored 21 points and the Milwaukee Bucks held Detroit scoreless for seven minutes in the fourth quarter, snapping the Pistons' six-game winning streak.
Detroit took a 76-71 lead on Richard Hamilton's 20-foot jumper with 10:25 left, but did not score again until Ben Wallace hit a free throw with 3:08 left. Milwaukee ran off 16 consecutive points during the Pistons' dry spell, opening an 87-76 lead on Sam Cassell's baseline jumper with 3:25 to go.
Cassell scored 16 points and Allen added 14 for Milwaukee, which has won 13 of 16, coinciding with the return of Kukoc from the injured list. Milwaukee is 21-11 with Kukoc and 6-12 without him.
Detroit was led by Hamilton's 28 points. Chauncey Billups added 17, but Wallace was held to eight rebounds, all on the defensive end.
Heat 94, Rockets 82
HOUSTON - Caron Butler scored 24 points and the Miami Heat held off a late charge by the Rockets.
The Heat never trailed in the game, although the Rockets rallied briefly in the third quarter after trailing 56-41 at the half.
The Rockets eased back into the game despite their continued poor shooting and cut Miami's lead to 68-61 with 3:47 left in the quarter. But the Heat held on for a 70-61 lead to start the fourth.
Steve Francis scored 27 points for the Rockets, who hit only 33 percent from the field. Yao Ming and Mobley each had 10 points for the Rockets and Mike James and Travis Best each had 15 points for the Heat.
Jazz 109, Wizards 77
SALT LAKE CITY - Karl Malone had 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Utah Jazz welcomed back coach Jerry Sloan from his suspension and said goodbye to Michael Jordan.
Andrei Kirilenko added 20 points and Matt Harpring scored 17 for the Jazz, who came back after their worst loss of the season with one of their most dominant. And they did it against Jordan, who won two of his six NBA titles against Utah.
Barring a miracle run to the finals by both teams, Jordan scored 11 in his last game at the Delta Center and was cheered loudly each time he made a shot.
Larry Hughes led the Wizards with 14 points, getting six in the fourth quarter against the Jazz reserves.
Knicks 116, Suns 115
PHOENIX - Allan Houston scored 26 points and Kurt Thomas had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead New York over Phoenix.
The Knicks, playing the first of six straight road games against Pacific Division teams, improved to 7-14 away from home this season.
Latrell Sprewell, the subject of trade speculation, added 17 points for New York.
Stephon Marbury scored 12 of his 43 points in the final 4:21 for the Suns, but he missed the rim completely on a shot that could have won it at the buzzer.
Shawn Marion added 26 points for Phoenix and Amare Stoudemire had 25 points and 14 rebounds.
Kings 110, SuperSonics 81
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Keon Clark had 18 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots, and Peja Stojakovic scored 24 points as Sacramento shot 67 percent in the first three quarters of an easy win over Seattle.
Doug Christie matched his career high with 13 assists, and Mike Bibby had 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting as the Pacific Division leaders got back into top form with a balanced attack and accurate shooting from every player in an eight-man rotation.
Gary Payton had 20 points and Rashard Lewis shook off a sprained ankle to score 11, but Seattle never challenged in its fifth straight loss. The Sonics have fallen to 11th place in the Western Conference.
Bobby Jackson, activated from the injured list earlier in the day, scored eight points for the Kings.
