Newspaper photos win awards

KENT, Ohio - Cincinnati Enquirer news photographers won seven awards Saturday in the annual Ohio News Photographers Association competition.

Tony Jones won first place in the Pictorial category with an image of a brass horn salute during a marching band competition.

Stephen M. Herppich placed third in the Ohio Understanding Award with images from a yearlong project called Gathering Spots.

Michael E. Keating placed third in the Sports Picture Story category with photographs from the return of Pete Rose to Cinergy Field. Keating also won an Award of Excellence in General News.

Brandi Stafford and Ernest Coleman also won awards of excellence in General News and Pictorial categories, respectively.

Ed Suba Jr. of the Akron Beacon Journal was chosen Photographer of the Year for 2002 by the association. Keating won an award of excellence in that category.

One hundred thirty-eight photographers from across the state submitted 1,868 entries in the 52nd annual news photography contest judged at Kent State University.
