Cincinnati firefighters and paramedics surround Norman Jackson, rescued from his burning third-floor apartment in Over-the-Rhine Tuesday afternoon. Engine Five firefighters found heavy smoke when they responded to 23 Green St. about 12:20 p.m., District Chief Steven Phillips said. Firefighters knocked the fire down quickly and found Jackson unconscious on a mattress on the floor.

Firefighters revived him outside, the chief said. If they had not arrived when they did, the chief said, Jackson almost certainly would have died. He was in fair condition at University Hospital.

The fire was under investigation.
