Turfway to race Mondays in March
The Enquirer and wire reports
Turfway Park, which through Friday has lost nine programs to weather since the thoroughbred meet began Jan. 1, will race on all five Mondays in March. The track will offer nine races March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 with a 1:10 p.m. post.
Today a full field of 12 3-year-old fillies is scheduled to contest the $50,000 Valdale Stakes. The 1-mile race is a prep for the $150,000 Bourbonette Breeders' Cup, a supporting race on the March 22 Lane's End Stakes card.
DERBY DOINGS: Nothing to Lose closed late to edge White Cat by a half-length in the Palm Beach Stakes grass race at Gulfstream Park.
Nothing To Lose, ridden by Jerry Bailey and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, is 4-of-4 on grass but will return to the dirt and try to make it to the May 3 Kentucky Derby.
The colt finished fourth in his two races on dirt. But his next start is set for the Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park.
Owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey are having a big month with their 3-year olds. Last Sunday, the Ramseys' Badge of Silver won the Risen Star Stakes by 10 lengths at the Fair Grounds to become a Derby contender.
Risky Cat, trained by Ken McPeek, tries to get back in the Derby picture when he takes on 10 others in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.
Atswhatimtalknbout ran himself into Derby consideration by winning a 1 1/16th-mile allowance race at Santa Anita on Thursday. Trained by Ron Ellis, the 3-year-old colt has two wins in three starts. His next scheduled start is the San Felipe Stakes on March 16.
DONN HANDICAP: Harlan's Holiday is the 8-5 favorite in a strong field of 11 older horses for today's $500,000 Grade I race at Gulfstream Park.
Harlan's Holiday, trained by Todd Pletcher, will try to become the first Florida Derby winner to take the Donn in successive years. The 4-year-old Ohio-bred champion leaves from the outside post under John Velazquez.
