40-year-old Jordan hangs 43 on Nets
McGrady scores 52 points in three quarters
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Four days after turning 40, Michael Jordan scored 43 points in 43 minutes.
Jordan became the first 40-year-old in NBA history to score 40 or more points, and also hit the game-winning shot as the Washington Wizards beat the New Jersey Nets 89-86 Friday night.
"I told the guys, I've got 28 games left; I'm going down with no bullets," said Jordan, who is expected to retire at the end of the season. "I'm going all out. It's the end of my career, and I don't want to see it end in a negative way."
Jordan, who already was the oldest player in NBA history to reach the 40-point mark after having done so at age 39, made 18 of 30 shots and seven of eight free throws Friday. He also made the hustle move of the night, sprawling on the floor to save the ball after making a steal in the first quarter.
"It set the tone in terms of how bad I wanted to win this game," Jordan said.
Jordan's layup with 34 seconds to play put the Wizards ahead 87-86. Jerry Stackhouse, an 87 percent foul shooter who was 0-for-4 from the line to that point, made two to finish the scoring as the Wizards broke a six-game losing streak to the Atlantic Division leaders.
The victory came at a crucial time for the Wizards, who had lost three of their previous four games and had just lost their third-leading scorer, Larry Hughes, for three weeks with a sprained ankle.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Tracy McGrady scored a career-high 52 points in three quarters and Drew Gooden added 22 points and 11 rebounds in his Orlando debut.
"When I get it rolling like that, get me the ball because I can make a lot of things happen," McGrady said.
McGrady was 15-of-32 from the field and 16-for-20 from the line to eclipse his 50 points last season against Washington. He was one point shy of the franchise record of 53 set by Shaquille O'Neal against Minnesota on April 20, 1994.
McGrady, who sat out the fourth quarter, also came up a point short of Allan Houston's NBA season high of 53.
McGrady shot 5-of-10 in each of the first two quarters and was 10-for-11 from the line for 33 points at the half. He had Orlando's last 16 points of the second quarter and opened the third with a 3-pointer.
Hornets 125, Grizzlies 123 (OT)
NEW ORLEANS - Jamal Mashburn scored 50 points for New Orleans, which held off Memphis after blowing a nine-point lead after the first quarter.
Mike Miller had 23 points for the Grizzlies.
Mavericks 100, Rockets 85
HOUSTON - Dirk Nowitzki had 34 points and 11 rebounds as Dallas completed a season sweep of Houston.
Steve Francis led Houston with 19 points and Yao Ming had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Timberwolves 103, Pistons 96
MINNEAPOLIS - Kevin Garnett had 34 points and 16 rebounds as Minnesota set a franchise record with 13 consecutive home wins.
Wally Szczerbiak added 20 points and Troy Hudson had 12 points and 11 assists for the Timberwolves, who nearly blew a 24-point second-half lead.
76ers 119, Cavaliers 99
CLEVELAND - Allen Iverson matched a season high with 41 points, and Philadelphia rolled to its fifth straight win. It was the Sixers' 15th consecutive victory over the Cavs.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 19 points and Ricky Davis 16 for the Cleveland, which has lost five straight games and 15 of its last 17.
Raptors 92, Suns 89
TORONTO - Antonio Davis had 22 points, including the final four of the game, as Toronto sent Phoenix to its fourth loss in five games since the All-Star break.
Rookie Amare Stoudemire did not start for Phoenix, because he violated an unspecified team rule.
