Augusta supporters seek protest permits

Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Two groups have asked for permits to demonstrate against Martha Burk, the chairwoman of the women's organization that has led the fight against Augusta National's all-male membership policy.

Burk and the National Council of Women's Organizations has indicated that they might organize a demonstration protest during the Masters tournament in April.

The other groups turned in applications this week to the Augusta-Richmond County Sheriff's Office to demonstrate against Burk's group.

Allison Price, an Augusta woman who started a group called "WAMB," or Women Against Martha Burk, applied for a permit to demonstrate in the downtown Augusta area on April 6, the Sunday before the Masters.

Todd Manzi of Tampa, Fla., who started a Web site called www.theburkstopshere.com, has applied for the four days of the tournament, April 10-13. The location has yet to be determined.

Price, the owner of a local restaurant, said she has "20 to 25 women" who want to hold up signs opposing Burk.

"Martha Burk does not speak for all women across this country, especially for many in Augusta," Price said.

Burk said she had heard that Manzi was going to apply for a permit but "I didn't know there was going to be another one."

"It's a free country. This is what a democracy is all about," said Burk, who has not applied for a permit.
