Turfway cancellations have rider sitting still
The Enquirer and wire reports
Jason Lumpkins was the nation's leading jockey, winning five races a day on five occasions at Turfway Park since Jan. 1. Then two weeks of snow and freezing rain hit the Cincinnati area.
Lumpkins has ridden 67 winners this year but has not raced since Feb. 12, the last time Turfway raced.
The track has lost nine dates this winter but hopes to resume racing Wednesday. Perennial leader and Isaac Murphy Award champion Russell Baze has overtaken Lumpkins in the national standings.
Lumpkins, who rode against Baze in Northern California the past three years, moved to a Kentucky farm he bought shortly before getting his 2,000th career win in January.
Two other jockeys, Rodney Prescott and Mary Doser, reached the 1,000-win milestone at Turfway this month, and Billy Troilo needs just four wins to reach 2,000.
